MyTeamTriumph inaugural race at the Pinery
Lynda Hillman-Rapley
Lakeshore Advance
Wes Harding, who will bring the ride along program in an
inaugural race to the Pinery Park road race in October 20th,
has crossed his fair share of finish lines, but none - not his
first place finishes at the Huron House Boys Hozne race and
the Hypothermic Half Marathon, nor his poignant accom-
plishments at the Boston Marathon and Ironman competi-
tions - quite compare to the race where he posted his slowest
time yet.
. It took him 76 minutes to run 16 kilometres at a race last
year in Grand Rapids, "and I cherished every minute of it. I

didn't want the race to end," says the Sarnia man who origi-
nally called Arkona his hozne.
"When I crossed that finished line to thousands of cheer-
ing people, it wasn't about me7
It was about his "captain," Scott, a non-verbal man in his
early 20s, who Harding and two other runners pushed along
the race route in a special sports chair.
"The excitement in his face and the Joy in his squeal - that,
to me, is what running's all about," he says.
Harding will be the guest speaker at the Lambton Shores
Accessibility Committee 3rd annual Accessibility Day on Sat-
urday, September 28th.
"It's great crossing a finishing line, but when you can do it
together, there's much Joy in that,"
said Harding, who has received attention this year for the
release of his first book about his Journey from an overweight
couch potato to an Ironman, participated in the race as an
"angel" with the American organization My Team Triumph.
The group acts as a ride along program, allowing those with
disabilities - be it children, adults, or veterans - to experience
the thrill of a race.
'There are 20 chapters across the united States - the most
recent opened in New Jersey, when a elan got inspired to
make a positive change after reading t tarding's hook - and
now, !larding is bringing the organization to Canada for the
first time.
"After running that race, I thought, '1 want to do Imre of
that."
In May, My Team Triumph iumph founder and CEO Ronald Robb
confirmed !larding would lead the Sarnia chapter.
Right now, he's working on putting together a hoard, and
once it's formed, they'll apply to Revenue Canada for a non-
profit status.
1larding hopes to have at (east a couple chairs purchased
by the end of this year and would like to get participants into
the Jingle Bell Run in December.
For now, the Sarnia branch will keep its eyes on shorter
races in I.atnhton County.
"'1he primary focus vitt be doing it here and doing it well,"
he says, "and hopefully that inspires others to start chapters:"
Officials hope the idea will spread across Canada like it did
in the States. 'That's the goal: coast to coast."
1 larding will be reading and discussing his hook "Destined
to Run: My Spiritual Journey from (;ouch Potato to Roston to
Ironman" at the Sarnia Library's West Room Sept. 25 at 7
p.m.
The Sarnia native's hook is about his journey from inactiv-
ity to becomming a marathon runner, triathlete and Ironman
finisher.
