Young farmer pressing for success Lakeshore Advance Although the fries were a highlight, the reason for Saturday's open house near Parkhill was to showcase Brian Steeper's oilseed press. Steeper is a young entrepreneur look- ing to add value to his farm in a new way. The now 21 year old was born and raised on a farm. When he was younger his family had a herd of l tolstein cattle, then when he was 9 years old they sold the dairy quota and got into turkeys and cash cropping. Steeper is no stranger to hard work and running his own busi- ness. At the age of 16 he and his brother got into sheep. Since then he has his own cash crop farm and works for a heating and cooling company. Steeper also completed a degree at University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus for agriculture. 'ib diversify his operation even more, Steeper has now installed an oilseed pressing system produced by Energrow, a local Canadian company, on his farm. "1 bought this system because 1 wanted to keep my foot in the door in the field of agriculture but still be able to work off the farm. My system is automated and runs while I'm at work so it will add value without needing me to be home to habysit it:' E:ncrgrow Systems enable producers to press oilseeds like soybeans in order to extract oil in order to produce a freshly pelleted soybean meal. The soy- bean meal offers dairy cows a palatable protein feed that's palatable and fresh and offers more energy than solvent extracted soybean meal. Steeper processes his own soybeans on-farm or offers custom pressing for local producers. "It's a great way to add value to my beans and offer my custom- ers a fresh, consistent, and high quality soybean meal. "1'm hosting this open house to invite producers and the pub- lic to learn more about what I'm doing." For some added flavour, the oil pro- duced by Brian's press will be used to make fresh cut fries for visitors. 'lhis was an opportunity to check out an innovative, rural entrepreneur.
