Toronto Marlies coach predicts pro careers for Rupert twins
Ryan Pyette
SMI Agency
There was one more unintentional
bonus to Steve Spott leaving the Kitch-
ener Rangers to run the Toronto Marlies
this year.
Ile gets to coach London Knights twins
Matt and Ryan Rupert at this week's NHL
rookie tournament rather than face them
this fall.
"It's going to be great seeing them
(together) in the lineup (Saturday)," Spott
id. "They're better together. They have
mistry and to see those two boys with
e 'Toronto Maple Leafs sweater on is
going to be special for their family.
They re hard-nosed, character kids and
they've got the hearts of guys who are
6 -foot -3 or 4.'
Spott intends to use the brothers, likely
on a line with former Leafs first -rounder
Tyler Biggs, in the Saturday -night show-
case game against Pittsburgh. Will Ryan
Rupert take an old-fashioned run at Pens
hopefuls and Knights pals 011i Maatta
and Scott I larrington?
"Probably not," he said with a grin. "I
don't tend to do those to the guys I
know."
Spott's vast knowledge of the twins and
their rough-and-tumble game should
work to their advantage, according to
Ryan, a Leafs pick. 1t tnight also lend a
helping hand to Matt, still an NHL free
agent and looking for a contract to sign.
"Other than their last names, they both
deserve a lot of respect because they're
both special players," Spott said. "Look at
their numbers in the playoffs last year.
Matt was outstanding. They've both got a
ton of ability, they're gritty players, agita-
tors, and both have a chance to be good
pros one day."
Getting a foot in the door is Matt's top
priority.
"This is a chance to try to get signed
and show 1 can play at the AHL level,

which I believe] can;' he said. "The guys
here are bigger and stronger and It's just
like my first year in the OHL. I proved a
lot of people wrong there, because I was
smaller, and it's Just move up a level and
do It again."
The Ruperts, who normally live at
Knights coach Dale Hunter's house, are
staying in a London hotel for the first
time. If you think that's strange, long-
time foes Spott and Knights GM Mark
Hunter watched a practice together on
Thursday.
"I often say hockey brings out the best
and worst in people," said Spott, whose
last OHL game was a Budweiser Gardens
playoff loss. "That was a good example.
There's so many good people in hockey
and for Mark and I, with 17 years of com-
peting against each other, to sit and have
a nice talk was fantastic."
