to mark 100th anniversary of sinking
Grand Bend, ON Save Ontario
Shipwrecks, 11uro11 Shores Chapter, is
pleased to announce the installation
of a permanent memorial wreath on
the
Wexford shipwreck. 'Ihe wreath will
be unveiled on Saturday, September
28, as part of a ceremony to honour
the c1't'W of the Wexford all 111
commemorate the 100 111 anniversary
141. the sinking of the ship.
I'he Wexford was one of ;► dozen
'-ships that Wl'I1l down 111 the Great
Storms of 1913: over four days in
November, this "white hurricane"
raged over the (li'g'ht Lake's. By the end
it had claimed more than 2 50 lives:
most ships, like the Wexford, Went
down with ,111 hands. '1'o this day, the
Great Stot'in remains the most
destructive storm ever to hit the Creat
Lakes legion.
Ihe memorial ceremony, hosted by
the Huron Shores Chapter of Save
Ontario Shipwrecks, is scheduled for
108111 on Saturday, September 28. lhe
ceremony will take place at the site of
the Wexford shipwreck, approximately
8 miles offshore front Grand Bend,
ON. Everyone is welcome to attend,
and SOS Huron Shores has installed
extra mooring lines at the site in
anticipation Of increased boat traffic.
A ,reception will he held after the
memorial ceremony, at the l.anlbton
1leritage Museum just south of (rand
Bend. We invite everyone to come
meet the SUS team, and to enjoy some
Tight refreshments while taking in
displays about the Wexford, her crew,
and the Great Storm.
