Stories of
the Women's Institute production
"I Was Born"
hosted by the Alice
Munro Writers and
Readers Festival
Most life stories begin with
"1 was born" thus the title of
Peggy Coffey's mask and story
piece was chosen. This is a
presentation you won't want
to miss.
The Alice Munro Writers &
Reader's Festival is hosting a
pr'e'sentation by actor and cre-
ative director Peggy Coffey in a
reading of her mask mut story
piece - I Was Burn - at 1:30pm
on September'2llth, 2013 at the
Phillips Studio, 209 I)insley
Street, Blyth. Peggy brings alive
the stories of women who
began their lives at the turn of
the century in rural Ontario -
extraordinary women Who
lived through some of the most
dramatic changes of any gen-
eration. The presentation is
based on stories Of the women
of the Women's Institutes,
which were collected and pub-
lished by the Women's Insti-
tute (WI) in a took called From
This Place by Pat Salter:
'these stories will touch your
heart and soul. The Institute
Women slid so much fur rural
Ontario.
"1 was immediately taken by
the power and historical sig-
nificance of the stories these
women tell about the lives
they lived in the early part of
the 20th Century in rural
southern Ontario;" Peggy says,
and she began to envision a
theatre piece which would tell
these stories and celebrate telt'
lives of these remarkable
women.
Working in collaboration
with l leather Rutllig, a prop
and mask maker from the
Stratford
Festival, they created the
first mask. 'Grace' is a ninety
year old woman who tells the
first story.

Live owls at this
year's owl prowl
ABCA
'Ihe Ausable Bayfield Conserva-
tion hosts an Owl Prowl each
November, and this year the Blue -
water Centre for Raptor Rehabili-
tation will he bringing live owls to
the event.
This is the first year Biuewater
Centre for Raptor Rehabilitation is
taking part to bring live owls to the
event.
'this year's event takes place of
Saturday, November 2, 2013 at
Morrison 1)am Conservation Area
Workshop, on 71108 Morrison
Line, two kilometres east of Exeter
and just south of 1iighwny 83.
People may choose to attend
one of the following three ses-
sions: 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m, or 7
p.m. to 9 p.m., or 8:30 p.m. - 10:30
p.m.
This is also the first time people
will have three sessions to choose
from. Families with younger chil-
dren are encouraged to attend the
earlier sessions.
"New this year, we are very
excited to have live owls, pre-
sented by the Bluewater Centre for
Raptor Rehabilitation," said Julie
Stellingwerff, Conservation Edu-
cation Specialist. She suggests that
people taking part should conte
early this year as space is limited.
"'elle Owl Prowl event is very pop-
ular," she said. "We expect people
will really want to attend this year
as live owls have been added to
the program, so that's why we will
offer three sessions throughout
the evening."
The Owl Prowl is billed as a
night of fun and learning about
nature. Staff members present
facts about owls. People who take
part get to join in a moonlit,
guided night -hike owl 'hoot.' I tun-
dreds of people have learned
about owls and how they adapt at
night. Some people have seen and
heard Eastern Screech Owls dur-
ing this unique chance to learn
about these special birds.
The Owl Prowl event is free but
donations are always welcome to
support conservation education.
People taking part are asked to
dress for the weather and to leave
pets at home.
