plowing, because its something they
don't see much around here. It's part of
our roots and...they like to see that. Plus
everybody likes to see people competing
and doing a job well," he said.
Sixty-two plowers competed in the
Huron County Plowing Match this year,
compared to the approximately 50 who
competed last year.1luron County Plow-
man's Association President Brian Gavin
also said more people were served at the
Plowing Match's pancake breakfast than
ever before.
"'Ihe International Plowing Match is in
Perth County this year so there's more
interest because it is so close," said
Corbett.
"'Ihe weather was in our favor too, and
the wheat harvest has finished up," said
Corbett. "Nobody's started bean harvest,
so farmers aren't in their fields working.
It gave them a chance to get out too.'
Cecelia Corbett is the secretary of the
Huron County Plowman's Association,
and attributed the rise in partipiant num-
bers to a bigger 4-11 class. About 21 4-H
members competed in Huron County
this year, which is up from 18 in 2012.
The number of participants from the
4-11 Sodbusters Club was also up this
year.
"We had 18 Sodbuster members this
year, which isn't the highest number
they've ever had but it is up from the last
couple of years;" said Steve Corbett.
Corbett said he expects interest in the
county match to increase over the next
few years as it gears up to host the Inter-
national Plowing Match in Walton in
2017.
"We'll probably see a little bit of an
increase in attendance," he said.
Participants of the county plowing
thatches compete for points to qualify for
the International Plowing Match, which
this year is being held in Mitchell Sept.
17-21. .
Planning is underway for the 2017
International Plowing Match and com-
mittees are being set up. Corbett said the
souvenir and cook book committees are
already in swing.
"The first thing that comes out is the
cookbook and then the souvenirs
because they can be sold two years in
advance of the match," said Corbett. 11e
added the cookbook committee is start-
ing to collect recipes for the book. 'thost
interested can submit recipes by em:
ing huronplowman(i)llay.net.
'lhe Huron County Plowman's Associ-
ation will be needing more volunteers as
2017 approaches, and estimates around
1,500 volunteers will be needed.
