The theater, which is run by volunteers through the Kiwanis Club, made the switch to a digital for- mat last April and within a few months organized its first film festival. 'the festival is returning for its second season this month. "The idea of the film festival was to be able to bring in a different type of movie that we couldn't otherwise play," Said theatre volunteer (filen Star- key. "i saw the need...We had people coating to our theatre saying, can you play this one." 1 always said no, can't do that. It just wasn't economical." This changed with the digital system, which makes films easier to acquire, explained Starkey. Ile added digital films are also easier to play because the theatre no longer needs to keep a pro- jectionist on duty at all tinges, as was the case with film. The festival is spread out over a number of months. Between this September and March 2014, the theatre will be showing one festival flick per month for a total of six movies. The proceeds from the festival are donated to the Forest Museum. "1 thought if we could do the fundraising for the museum and make better use of the movie theatre it would be a win-win," said Starkey. "Last year it certainly was. We had a wonderful turnout" Over 100 festival subscriptions were sold last year, and over $4,000 was raised for the museum, The Municipality of Lambton Shores LIVING IN LAMBTON SHORES... The theatre has a seating capacity of 220. 'there are three movie packages avail- able for the festival. To see all the mov- ies, a six -film subscription package is $45. A five -movie package is $40 dollars and $36 covers a four -movie package. Packages are on salt' until the night of the showing of the first film, on Sept. 16. Rush tickets are also available at the door for $10. Starkey said the films are different from the regular I Iollywood box office films the theater usually plays, and the festival helps bring in a new crowd of people, "it's people looking for a more chal- lenging movie, something that has maybe a little bit more plot than what the Sinurfs may have," joked Starkey, adding there are some light-hearted films showing during the festival as well, The festival will kick off Sept. 16 with Before Midnight, it romantic drain star- ring Ethan Hawke and Julie I)elpy. Also playing (luring the festival is comedy ill1(i crime drama Angels' Share, it dl'iiina starring Joel Evans and Benjamin Brett about t young Fist Nations teen trying to find his place in the modern world called The Lesser Blessed, and Still Mine, a drama about an elderly couple fighting against .1(1tlloritit's in rural ilt'tV Brunswick to build their house. Mud, starring Matthew 11tct.'onaughey and Unfinished Song starring Terence Stamp and Gemma Arterton will also be play- ing during the festival. "Each one is a little hit different than the other," said Starkey. "'They're not all love stories or they're not all heavy drama, but they all have a message," he said. Two of the six movies playing at the festival this year were filmed in Canada, and Starkey said he is making an effort to bring in Canadian films. Another festival and more events on the horizon at Kineto , 'The theatre is in talks with the'loronto International Filnl Festival to organize another festival in the spring that focuses on independent Canadian Films, said Starkey. "It's a matter of getting funding in place for something like that," he said. "We're hopeful." Starkey said he wants to arrange for more community -oriented movie show- ings, such as showing movies on PI) days or hosting Stars and Strollers show- ings for parents and their children, and is looking into the feasibility of such events. "We've got lots of ideas," said Starke'. "Its just a matter of getting thein all going." '1 he theatre is entirely volunteer -run by Kiwanis international, and Starkey said the theatre is always looking fori volunteers to ht'lp put idylls Into action.
