Aatvari 2$ /flirt Lynda Hillman-Rapley Lakeshore Advance It was 45 years ago this week that flames took ver what was once a opular music casino hall in Ipperwash and many still remember it like it was yesterday. As the story goes, John Ross built the hotel and dance hall known as the Casino, on the east side of the road. There had been a small dance hall across the road but it had been con- verted to a bowl- ing alley. The original shareholders were Stuart Ovens, Arthur Ovens, Col. Duncan Ross Mr. Squires and Lisleie Collie the book keeper. At some time the Evans brothers of Ailsa Craig were also associated with this group. This group was called the Ipper- wash Development Company. In John Smith's Ipperwash Beach it states "The Casino began as an exclu- sive night spot with dining room and big bands playing and it was still a popular night spot to go to dance or stroll with your "sweetie" to listen to the waves rolling off the lake when at the close of e evening, it burned to the ground." At the time of the fire Bert Simms owned ft, he bought it in 1958 from Col. Duncan Ross. After the fire Sims oper- ated an Esso Station and his wife ran a gift shop at the same location. Bert's son Fred Rutledge lives in Grand Bend. The fire was discovered shortly before a IPPenveill tech CmtaO 1430 midnight in an apartment at the north- west corner of the second floor. There was a dance at the time and when asked to leave the crowd of 400 left orderly and without panic. The kids were dancing to the tunes of The Odessa of Kitchener. The Forest Fire Co. and Thedford department received a call to the fire at 11:40 p.m. and fireman Ron Sullivan stated that when the first truck arrived moments later the roof had already col- lapsed. Flames fanned by a north- east wind enveloped the frame structure in minutes and the glow of the fire could be seen as far down the lake as Sarnia. Nothing was saved from the building. Careless smoking from the apartment was the cited cause of the fire. courtesy of Fred Rutledge Casino in the early days and the day after the 1968 fire. Clarence Haskett (Haskett funeral home) played in this band. OFFICE HOURS The New Office Hours for The Lakeshore Advance will be as follows...
