AARNIE UNIT TOWS ADRIFT VESSEL
TO SAFETY OFF GRAND BEND
(LAKE 11t1RON) The lluron County ()PP Marine Unit
was activated last week to help out a mariner that experi-
enced transmission problems with his vessel. At approxi-
mately 9:30 p.m. on July 25 Huron OPP received a dispatch
call regarding a 20 -foot Larson Bowrider power craft that
was floating adrift with five occupants. 'Ihe vessel had been
adrift for approximately three hours before the distress call
was made, and marine officers from the lluron ()PP
detachment launched from the Grand Bend Marina, locat-
ing the stranded vessel around 10:40 p.m. a few kilometers
south of Grand Bend and less than one kilometer from
shore. The disabled vessel was safely towed hack to the
Grand Bend Marina. Huron OPP Marine officers noted the
vessel was equipped with all of the required safety equip-
ment; however the combination of falling temperatures
and increased winds made conditions less than ideal for
the passengers.
This Incident serves as a reminder for all mariners to be
prepared for the unexpected.
Always check and monitor the weather conditions.
Always ensure to file a sail plan with someone that
knows where you will be and when you will be back.

to be addressed.
"Overall, the inspectors were very pleased with the level of
compliance with the Fire Code requirements and the willing-

Are you able to contact someone in
case of an emergency? Remember
cell phones are not always reliable. A
marine radio system is more reliable.
Should your boat even leave the
(lock? [lave you checked the hull for
cracks and damage? Are the electri-
cal, fuel, and cooling systems working
properly'? !hive you checked the oil?
Are the batteries charged? Is the
drainage plug in place? Is the throttle
an(i steering working? Are the
navigation lights working? Is your fuel
tank full? Remember, 1/3 to go, 1/3 to
return and 1/3 in reserve.
Ensure you have your required
safety equipment on board and that
you and your passengers know how to
use it.
'Ihe !Rutin County Marine Unit will
continue to provide ongoing patrols
of Lake Iluron this summer in an
