It was a whole lot of gold and silver for the Forest I )rugon [mutt
racers who recently returned home from Szeged I Iungary after
competing at the 11th World Dragon Birt Championships.
The dragon boat team started at North Lambton Secondary
School in the fall of 2008 with their first races being Wallaceburg
and Stratford in 2009. Since then the temp has expanded to five
races a season.
Dragon boating is a 22 person boat - there are 20 paddlers, a
W•erns man, and a drummer. Each section of the boat has a role -
d strokes, engine rooni and the rockets. The key to success is
aming and everyone working together.
The junior part of the Lambton Shores Dragon Boat Club con-
sists of 60 paddlers ranging in age from 12 -20. The majority are
high school students but more elernentauy students are getting
involved all the time. About 1/3 are elementary aged.
The team has competed in Wallaceburg, London, Stratford,
Dubuque Iowa, Disney, Woodstock "We have won every junior
competition we have entered and have medaled at most races
against adult teams. Races have different divisions and we do
very well in each race. Our goal is to do better in each race each
year," said Grand Bend's Brenden Soudant last week.
Training is done at Port Franks two times a week for the junior
paddlers. Adults also practice - there are three adult teams Who
paddle once a week. 'Ihe national team members also trained
up to six days a week from September until July. 'they did a vari-
ety of dry land training, cardio, ergometer (paddling machine)
and rowing machines following a program that follows the Long
Tern Athlete Development (l1'AD) model from Dragon Boat
Canada. For Hungary they trained by doing a mix of cardio,

teams. The junior division is growing -
there are now juniors in pain court, Wind-
sor, London, Woodstock, and Stratford as
well as forest. We will be challenging for
the Junior cup in Woodstock in the 10111.
There will be about (i teams there in the
Junior division. We will have two.
'the juniors will ht' competing in Victo-
