The dragon boat team started at North Lambton Secondary School in the fall of 2008 with their first races being Wallaceburg and Stratford in 2009. Since then the temp has expanded to five races a season. Dragon boating is a 22 person boat - there are 20 paddlers, a W•erns man, and a drummer. Each section of the boat has a role - d strokes, engine rooni and the rockets. The key to success is aming and everyone working together. The junior part of the Lambton Shores Dragon Boat Club con- sists of 60 paddlers ranging in age from 12 -20. The majority are high school students but more elernentauy students are getting involved all the time. About 1/3 are elementary aged. The team has competed in Wallaceburg, London, Stratford, Dubuque Iowa, Disney, Woodstock "We have won every junior competition we have entered and have medaled at most races against adult teams. Races have different divisions and we do very well in each race. Our goal is to do better in each race each year," said Grand Bend's Brenden Soudant last week. Training is done at Port Franks two times a week for the junior paddlers. Adults also practice - there are three adult teams Who paddle once a week. 'Ihe national team members also trained up to six days a week from September until July. 'they did a vari- ety of dry land training, cardio, ergometer (paddling machine) and rowing machines following a program that follows the Long Tern Athlete Development (l1'AD) model from Dragon Boat Canada. Competitions (festivals) have many aspects - there are local teams that are supporting local companies and causes, breast cancer teams, and competitive teams. The junior division is growing - there are now juniors in pain court, Wind- sor, London, Woodstock, and Stratford as well as forest. We will be challenging for the Junior cup in Woodstock in the 10111. There will be about (i teams there in the Junior division. We will have two. 'the juniors will ht' competing in Victo- ria BC August 23-25 at the Canadian national championship. This event Is a qualifier for the Club Crew World Cham- pionships being held in Italy in 2014. "We hope to qualify and compete in Italy at this event next year.' New paddlers are always welcome to come out and try this fun sport.
