however, he added, there is not an arena in the area that
breaks even without some project like solar installations to off-
set the opertuing costs.

Distance may be the biggest
etriment to recreation serv-
ices and upkeep in the Munic-
ipality of Bluewater.
Council met with municipal
staff Tuesday, July 30 to reas-
sess and reevaluate the serv-
ices Bluewater provides and
how much use they get.
"We're going to have to
stake some big decisions,"
said Councilor 'Tyler !Jesse!
prior to the meeting. "We're
not big enough to support
everything we have."
With arenas in 1 Iensall, Hay-
field, Zurich and the Stanley
Complex in Varna, in addition
to soccer fields and baseball
diamonds, staffing all the
facilities is a significant
expense for the municipality.
What's more is because of
sporadic use, some facilities
like the Bayfield Arena, have
insufficient use for staff sched-
cling and covering c'osts,1 les -
se! said.
"Population wise, we are
likely bigger than Goderich
but barely," 1 Iessel noted. "But
we are all spread out and so
we have to start weighing the
service versus the tax dollars

The previous facilities
review completed in 2009,
mentions removing the ice
from the Hayfield Arena. But,
1 Iessel said, the space can be
used for indoor recreation --
what he refers to as a "shorts
and t -shirts type gynt:'
An outdoor rink could sat-
isfy the need for winter recrea-
tion, he added, and there are
already community members
that would partner 00 a joint
project.
Utilizing the building as a
convention hall could also
contribute to a multi -use facil-
ity. The arena already has full
kitchens.
Because of the timing of the
report, ice time in Bayfield for
the coining year will not he an
issue.
"People are already com-
mitted- 1 Iessel said. "We are
not being fair to the public if
we are taking out the ice this
fall"
The arena only sees about

it is not about losing facili-
ties, 1lcssel said, so much as
creating specialties within the
Bluewater community.

soon as possible the ice is staying this year in order to not "scare
away potential customers:'
Meanwhile, consolidating services }flayed a big role in Tues-
day's recommendations.
The hay equipment depot on Blind Line outside Zurich is in
rough shape. 'Ihe cinderblock building is well over 50 years old,
and is too small for the equipment it currently holds, McAuley
said, adding repairs would be more than the building's worth.
Rather, the equipment depot at the Stanley Complex in Vanta
could be adapted to fit the extra equipment. The current salt
storage building behind the 1 -lay depot would remain as is. in
Bayfield the equipment depot will also be relocated to the
Stanley Complex, and the plan also includes making more office
space as well as reworking the council chambers there to allow
for a better public gallery and to improve visibility in the
cramped quarters.
