back popular Spirit Trail true part for Armstrong
Super -Natural Hike to South
Huron Trail in Exeter
Lakeshore Advance
Heavy rain forced the cancellation of The Spirit
Trail Super -Natural Ilike last year but the Friends
of the South Iluron Trail event organizers say
they're hoping for good weather in 2013 for the
fourth year of the event.
The spooky nature hike with a local history twist
first took place in 2010 and more than 100 local
people and visitors to the area have enjoyed the
hike since then. 'Ihe volunteer community group
Friends of the South I luron Trail has taken over
the event's organization and Cathy Seip is this
year's event Chairperson. "'Ihe Spirit 'frail Super -
Natural Hike is a little bit scary and a whole lot of
fun;' said Seip. "It's a chance to enjoy a walk along
the trail, meet the spirits of a few local pioneers
from days gone by, and learn how to take care of
the natural areas which are so important to our
area."
The trail group will host the popular historical
hike with an environmental theme on Thursday,
October 17, with guided hike at 6:30 p.m. The free
moonlit hike starts at MacNaughton Park, Exeter
and loops back, via Stirling Bridge, to MacNaugh-
ton Park. ilikers are asked to please meet at
MacNaughton Park Pavilion. Children must be
supervised.
'Ihe hike is a little spooky for the youngest chil-
dren and all children must be supervised by an
adult but, otherwise, The Spirit Trail is a great
event for families, according to the event Chair.
The walk can take an hour or more and walking
and standing is required. Participants are encour-
aged to dress for the weather and bring
flashlights.
The early -evening walk features a family -
friendly hike where ancestors from local history
deliver a conservation message. For information
on the hike visit abca.on.ca
Interested volunteers can help as hike leaders,
or with organization, registration, publicity, set-

Playing Mary Poppins is a dream
conte true for actress Jamie Armstrong.
When has always wanted to be on stage
and when she was a youngster in Brit-
ish Columbia her morn took her to see
the show. She cried when she realized
she was being taken to see it when she
was sure her mom was taking her there so
she could be in it. Inter when she watched
the movie on television she told her mom
one day she would be Mary Poppins. I ler
morn believed her child saying this would
he the perfect role for her. That fact is bit-
ter sweet because a few years ago her
morn passed away and did not see her
daughter's dream come tote. "'This makes
the part even more special for the;' Arm-
strong says.
Armstrong is no stranger to the stage
-and a favourite of 1ICPI1 audiences. As
Maria in Sound of Music she was feisty
as Mary Poppins she is far more reserved.
Armstrong explains that Mary Poppins
began as books written by PL
Travers. Throughout the Mary Poppins
series, which lasted from 1934 to 1988,
Mary Shepard was the illustrator and
acted as a second author.[1) The books
Centre on a magical English nanny, Maty
Poppins. She is blown by the East wind to
Number Seventeen Cherry Tree Lane,
London, and into the Banks' household
to care for their children. Encounters with
chimney sweeps, shopkeepers and vari-
ous adventures follow until Mary Poppins
abruptly leaves, i.e., "pops -out': The
adventures take place over a total of eight
books. However, only the first three books
feature Mary Poppins arriving and leav-
ing. The later five hooks recount previ-
ously unrecorded adventures from her
original three visits. As P. 1.. 'Travers
explains in her introduction to Mary Pop-
pins in the Park, "She cannot forever
arrive' and depart." In these books, says
Armstrong, Mary is a little darker, a little
saucier and "everything is not just sun-
shine and rainbows."

That is the production you will see at
IICPII. "It's all about family," she
says. This show just wrapped up in Cam-
bridge and Armstrong was so excited to
be back with her production family. As
she did in with the Sound of Music kids,
she took the kids on a picnic so the bond
and trust on stage is real. She remembers
herself as a child actor and knows how
important that bond is. "This experience
is huge for the children and I want them
to leave this production with a positive'
experience." I ler influence as an act
she says is Alex Mustakas. "1 le is a fasci-
nating person and has allowed the unbe-
lievable opportunities with the plays and
musicals. 1 am so grateful to him," she
says. Armstrong says she seems to be
snaking a career of being Julie Andrews so
she is an influence but has her own spin
when she is on stage. Although she has
the role of Julie Andrews, it is Jamie Arm-
strong theatergoers see on stage. Mary
Poppins is an incredible production for
the entire family. It runs from August 8 -
August 31st on the chain stage.
