West Nile in Huron County
Risk of infection is low but protection
is important

The local health unit has confirmed the first probable
human case of West Nile virus in I luron County in six years.
lean Guy Albert, Environmental Health Manager at the
,-' Iuron County Health Unit, said the case is a reminder for
'leople to be vigilant.
"West Nile Virus is still out there in Ontario. 'Ihe key
message is for people to get into the good habit of pro-
tecting themselves:"
"We know the virus is currently being carried in
Ontario's bird and mosquito populations and a bite from an
infected mosquito is all it takes fora person to be exposed
to the West Nile virus."
'Ihe last reported human case of West Nile virus was
in 2007, he said.
For confidentiality reasons, Albert said he couldn't
provide information on the person that is affected.
For that reason, he also can't inform residents
about that infected person's health status.
Tips from the health unit include
replacing screens on windows
and doors. While outside, use
bug repellant that contains
DEET, wear long-sleeved tops,
long pants, socks and shoes and limit time
outdoors.
Dusk is the worst time of day for people to encounter mos-
quitoes carrying West Nile Virus. Residents should also
ensure there is no standing water near their property.
Most infected people don't get sick.
if you have flu-like symptoms that don't go away, you
should consult your doctor. Signs to watch for include skin
rash, weak muscles, stiff neck, headache and swollen glands.

Work and dine on
smoke-free patios
Summer is all about appreciating the outdoors. Thanks
to the lead of many Lambton County restaurants and bars,
you can enjoy patios without the nuisance of second-hand
smoke.
Amanda Scales, Ilealth Promoter with the County of
Lambton Community I lealth Services Department, says
"It's time to recognize the growing number of bars and res-
taurants that offer stroke -free outdoor patios for patrons
and employees."
A current list of self -identified, smoke-free patios can be
found at www.lambtonhealth.on.ca . The list will be
updated as other establishments choose to adopt a smoke-
free policy.
In a recent survey, more than two-thirds of Lambton
residents supported the idea of smoke-free patios. Owners
/ managers currently operating smoke-free patios report
continued success with their business.
"Some owners and managers do not know they're
allowed to create a smoke-free policy for their patio," says
Scales. "We want to spread the message that smoke-free
patio policies are legal and customer feedback has been
positive."
Research indicates there is no safe level of second-hand
smoke whether indoors or outdoors. Smoking on patios
exposes employees and customers to the harmful effects
of second-hand smoke. Under the Smoke -Free Ontario
Act, smoking is prohibited in any enclosed public place
and enclosed workplace, including restaurants and bars.
