The Zurich Fair returns for its 149th with Wednesday,

In the lead -up to its 150th anniversary in
2014, organizers of the Zurich Country Fair
aim to attract a bigger crowd than in years
past. New additions to this year's weekend -
long event include a midway, motorcycle
show, and Battle of the Bands competition.
"We wanted to expand a little bit more this
year," said fair president Sylvia Neeb, "so that
we can get geared up for the 150th for next
year."
The event will kick off with its opening cer-
emonies on July 26. It will be marked with
eeches from local dignitaries and perfo-
nces by the South Huron Youth Jazz
and.
The midway, the first at the fair in "many,
many years," said Neeb, will open on Friday
evening and will remain open throughout
the rest of the weekend.
River Junction Band will perform at a fam-
ily dance starting Friday at 9 p.m. A beer gar-
den will also be set up for the age of majority
and made accessible by arni bands.
Also new this year is a motorcycle show to
take place between 12:30 and 2:30 on Satur-
day. Bikers will compete for 10 prize catego-
ries including dirtiest bike, best customized
bike, and oldest rider.
"We wanted something that would draw
people but we didn't want to step on toes
with the car show at the Bean Festival," said
Neeb, "so we thought we'd go bikes instead"
Local bands will compete in Battle of the
Bands on July 27. 'ibis event is sponsored by
MyFM Radio.
The competition will be judged by River
Junction Band vocalist Tammy Steeper,
Toronto Battle of the Bands winner Julia Cro-
marty, and a surprise third judge. The top
prize for the competition is $300.
Bands wishing to participate are asked to
contact Yvonne O'Brien at 519-236-7488 by
9 a.m. on July 27.
Returning this year will be crafts, baking,
and equestrian competitions. A full schedule
of events is available in a brochure on the
fair's website.
"The participation of the exhibitors have
been great over the years and in the last few
years its expanded," said Neeb. "Our exhibi-
tors are coming from farther and farther
away to show their product and their skill."
On July 28, an Old Time Jamboree will
start at 1 p.m., followed by a ham supper at 5
p.m. Both will be held at the Bluewater Com-
munity Centre.
Neeb says fair organizers can always find
jobs for volunteers, especially high school
students looking to fill their community hour
requirements. Those interested are asked to
call Neeb at 519-236-4042.
