For the police to have to warn parents
that they should not leave their chil-
dren or pets in a hot car -seems ludi-
crous --really folks -you need to be told
that? We are fairly sure we have not heard
so many reports where people are going
into stores and bars and other social
places and leaving their kids or pets in the
car to bake. On the heels of tui incident in
which a child and dog were left in a parked
car last week, officers are urging parents to
always take their kids with them - and for
passersby to be on the lookout for poten-
tially deadly situations.
In the past we did not hear a lot about
why we should not leave kids or pets in
cars- it was implied that leaving a child in
a hot car is unacceptable. Who would do
that? Well, in the past month or so we have
learned that a whole lot of people do this.
In the USA there have been more than 650
kids who died of heatstroke in a vehicle
since the early 1990s.
"I think we're more aware because of the
incidents that have happened across the
province," said Const. Ken Steeves. Several
children have died in Ontario this month
after being left in unattended vehicles.
One child, one pet is one too many.
Experts say the temperature inside a car
can reach potentially deadly levels within
minutes on a typical summer day. 'the
inside temperature can rise almost 20
degrees within the first 10 minutes. On a
mild day at 73 degrees outside, an SUV can
heat up to 120 degrees in just 30 minutes.
'the police say leaving a child in a car
while running into a store is even more
dangerous in extreme heat - and there is
always a potential for abduction. Why, as a
parent do you need to he told that? leave
your pet at home, take your child into the
store. Plain and simple- use common
sense.

Thanks Don Smith
'lb the Editor:
'ihe Grand Rend area owes much to
1)o11Smith who passed away on July
16th. In particular, l would mention his
involvement and assistance In the crea-
tion of our Grand Bend Area Commu-
nity 1 lealth Centre.
Don provided us with advice and
was aware of our undertaking in the
early stages of planning. It is no coinci-
dence that during construction 1:IIis-
1)on turned out to be our 'project man-
agement' company and that Michael
Smith provided hands on experience as
our 'project manager: Also, 'limn Pren-
dergast (since deceased) who was a
long time I:IlisDon construction 'site
superintendent' turned out to be
our'site superintendent' on the project.
I am sure that Don's influence was sig-
nificant in all of this and it continued
even after the building was operational.
Our community and all who use ti
GRACI IC will remember Don and hi.
contributions to Grand Bend for many
years to come. 'Thank you Don.

Men's Probus Inducts
Peter Twynstra
Submitted by Gary Pollard
and Lee Mc Cutcheon
If you need assistance your best bet
is to ask a busy person, and that has
frequently been the relationship
between our club and Mr. Peter
'iwwynstra . Never a member but a fre-
quent visitor and a forever helper,
Peter has been invited and has
accepted to become our I lonourary
Member, It is definitely a treasure for
our club to acquire such an accom-
plished individual.
Past President Gord Mackay who
nominated Peter as an inductee
referred to the numerous times in
which Peter has lent the club a help-
ing hand, frequently on very short
notice. Ile refers to Peter as a shin-
ing example of "giving back" to his
immediate and extended commu-
nity countless hours of inspirational
volunteerism. Most notable perhaps,
his achievement In spearheading the
Rotary Global Literacy program; a
program that has involved the local
involvement in the acquisition and
delivery of some 25 shipping con-
tainers of school books, furnishings
and equipment to South African
schools.
A founding member and former
President of Grand Bend Rotary,
Peter's other accomplishments range
from the farm fields to the fields of
agri-business, politics, trade associ-
ations, farm safety, plowing matches
and directorships in numerous local
and international organizations.
Numerous recognitions flow from
civic bodies, universities, and the
Governor General to compliment a
"work well done':
It happens that the induction
makes Peter the 100th member on
our current club roster, which now
exceeds 103 members. Our July meet-
ing also featured an intriguing talk by
Mr. Glen Baillie on the "cultural
aspects of Grand Bend and area': Glen
did an exceptional job of reviewing
the current cultural aspects of the
area, and also detailing how culture
can play a critical role in future devel-
opment of the community.
Next month's speaker Mr. Paul Car-
roll will inform us on "The Storm of
1913" ; join us on August 20 ,10.00
n.m Grand Bend Legion.
