Two agencies collaborate for better health care
Collaboration on the
delivery of service to
patients. A practical solution
for both agencies
Lynda HIIIman-Rapley
Lakeshore Advance
In a good news story, Grand Bend Area
Community Health Centre (CHC) board of
director vice chair Bryan Beattie told the
forum at the annual general meeting
Saturday.
He said with some sharing and coopera-
tion thbre is some positive healthcare hap-
pening locally.
In a bit of history Beattie explained that
with the establishment of the Local Health
Integration Networks (1.1IINS) throughout
Ontario was designed to have the delivery of
health services administered on a more
regional basis rather than through a single
all -Ontario ministry in Toronto.
Part of the thinking was that different
regions of the province have different needs
and in order to be effective the administra-
tion should be closer to the service area.
1t was intended to develop a more coop-
erative approach by having•the LH1NS look
for ways to have various agencies work with
each other to maximize efficiency and com-
prehensive delivery of health care. Having
said that, the situation here in Grand Bend
where the hospital and emergency care facil-
ity is South Huron Hospital in Exeter which
happens to be in a different LHINS than
Grand Bend's CHC.
Putting that glitch on a back burner, I)r.
Glenn Bartlett, Grand Bend's part time exec-
utive director was approached to fill a
vacancy for the same position at SiI hospi-
tal -making it a full time position between the
two organizations. With the approvals of he
board of directors of the two organizations
the arrangement was put in place and it was
sanctioned by the two 1.1IINS as a practical
solution to the agencies involved,
As the arrangement progressed there were
other parts of the operations identified that
would warrant a similar sharing of certain
personnel such as human resources man-
agement and electronic technology. Each
organization could not warrant a full time
qualified position on its own but sharing the
costs, both SH hospital and Grand Bend's
CHC could enjoy the advantage of having
what they needed from a top notch
employee.
So, a memorandum of understanding was
drafted to set out the intent and parameters
of sharing some personnel and In general
cooperating in the delivery of front line serv-
ice with five positions.
Beattie said while that is good news on its
own, one of the results of sharing some per-
sonnel was a better understanding of a lot of
personnel in both organizations as to what
services were and were not being offered and
where were unmet needs.
Now the two organizations are collaborat-
ing on the delivery of services to patients
that sees a dramatic enhancement of care
that was not previously available when each
organization was doing its own thing
independently.
