Pharmasave is big on community and in Grand
Bend community really
does matter. Pharmacist James Bannerman and
his staff are all local and offer that special home-
town touch. Bannerman is originally from Sea -
forth and graduated from the University of Toronto
in 1995 with a BSc in pharmacy. He followed that
with an industrial pharmacy residency with Astra
pharmacy in Mississauga and after two years there
he managed an IDA in Hamilton for several years.
He moved to Grand Bend in 2003 and has been
here ever since. "I'm happy to be back serving my
community again," he says. Also serving custom-
ers are Lisa Williams, pharmacy assistant, Dianne
Kadleclk customer service associate. Adam
(is McDowell is second pharmacist, helping out on
Mondays and Stephanie Faulds is a student from
Lambton College who is helping part time as a
pharmacy assistant and customer service
associate.
Why a pharmacist?
Bannerman explained his dad is a mechanic,
and he always told him to find a job where you
don't get your hands dirty. "But, really, I always
had an interest in science and math and liked to
help people, so pharmacy really felt like a good fit
for tne"
When he decided to open up his own pharmacy,
Bannerman said he had a lot of encouragement
from people in town. "'Ihe support the first couple
of months has been overwhelming. I truly am
thankful for all those that have supported this
endeavor. "
Not being strangers to the community makes
for an easier endeavor and Bannerman says his
customers feel very much like family." I'm sure my
staff feels the same way. Over the last 10 years I
think my customers are really comfortable with
coming to me for any drug related advice. Some of
whom I have helped with a drug related problem,
assisted with cotnpliance packaging or sat down

with them for a medication review and now they
have a much better understanding of what they
take and why."
When it comes to change- there is always some-
thing and Bannertnan says there are some signifi-
cant challenges now. "Phartnacists as profession-
als are moving towards a more clinical role. Our
new scope includes being able to give the flu shot,
in certain circumstances adapting or continuing
prescriptions as well. Drug costs are also rising as
our population ages and governments and drug
plans are constantly changing their policies to be
able to meet these challenges. Also, with many
people taking multiple medications, managing
those medications and any conflicts are also a
challenge. Now medication reviews for anyone
taking the government pays for over three medica-
tions. If we know how best to take our prescrip-
tions, we will stay healthy longer. It is important to
sit down with your pharmacist and ask those ques-
tions you have."
At Grand Bend's Pharmasave they have free
delivery. Seniors day is every Wednesday. They
have pretty much everything a traditional phar-
macy would have, over the counter medications, a
vitamin and herbal section, as well as some home
healthcare and daily living aids and if you don't
see it in the store he can probably order it for you
as well. And, transferring a prescription is easy.
They can transfer most medications for you. 1 low -
ever, there are a few types of prescriptions that
cannot be directly transferred but if you give them
a call or come in they can help.
