The longtime issue of sidewalk cafes
in Grand Bend will come back to council
on lune 20th with a request from line
Davies, from le -Dees Summer House
asking that the 2009 moratorium he
lifted. In a letter to council Davies
explained that in the fall of 2009 council
imposed a one-year moratorium on
sidewalk cafes with the rationale being
they needed to judge the effectiveness of
the new street design. "It has now been
in effect for three summers," he said, "As
you are probably aware, since that time
sidewalk cafes have become more and
more popular and can be found in larger
numbers of Ontario municipalities"
"In fact," explained Davies, "Due to the
popularity of these outdoor spaces, the
Alcohol and Gaming Commission M the
urging of municipalities, has changed
the liquor Taws to allow more restaurants
to meet the criteria for sidewalk cafes" In
his letter Davies explained the liquor
laws were amended to allow servers to
cross unlicensed areas to a licensed area
to allow for cafes in parking shots.
"Municipalities advocated for these
changes because of the benefits derived
not only by the restaurants, hut also by
neighbouring retailers as sidewalk cafes
draw people to the area."
Ile is asking council to lift the morato-
rium on sidewalk cafes in Grand Bend.
"As a property and business owner on
Main Street for 29 years, 12 of thea' with
a sidewalk cafe, 1 would like to share with
yotl 111y experiences and the and the rea-
sons for which 1 feel outdoor spaces ben-
efit not just my business, but other busi-
nesses in Grand Bend and the
municipality as a whole."
Council at 'Thursday's melting will
discuss this long-standing issue.
