For some medical students at the Uni- versity of Western Ontario, the last days of class were spent in rural hospitals and medical centres across Southwestern Ontario. With hopes of gaining a better under- standing of small-town medical practice, first-year students at UWO's Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry partic- ipated in Discovery Week, shadowing health-care practitioners in smaller •ommuuities. Students Daniel Etarsky and Matthew Florcynski spent last week at Grand Bend's Conttnunity 1 lealth Centre where they were pleasantly surprised with the model of services and programs this facility provides. "The week was really eye-opening. (Rural) family doctors deal with a wider scope of practice compared to family physicians in a larger city," Etarsky, who is from'lortmto said. Florcynski who is from Canada's west said they shadowed doctors and attended the many clinics offered. "We are so impressed with the resources. This is a new, comprehensive way of doctor- ing, with a great friendly atmosphere," he said. Both students said they don't know what they want to do when they finish but both saki they would not rule out family medicine. "Rural (practice) does appeal to ine a lot. Because there's not always a special- ist, you're able to do a little bit more. A lot of family physicians are able to work in the (emergency room):" South I luron 1 lospital's I)r. In addition, they also experience a wide variety of medical specialties and practices. Numerous physicians and other health care staff and adminis- trative personnel are involved each year to provide this oppor- tunity for students. As there are many communities and they vary greatly in size and available health care services, the expe- riences of the students vary; for instance students often shadow in the ER, OR, clinics, etc. 'Ihe week also involves socializing with the physicians and gaining a sense of the community. At the end of the week, students meet with the Assistant Dean Rural Regional for a wrap-up discussion of their experiences, and they share the highlights of their week.
