A TIME OF CHANGE. (Toronto Star,) Old party lines are being obliterated in the present campaign, says the St. Thomas Journal. Temperance Tories are enlisting by wholesale under the Rowell banner, and the indepenient Liberals who helped to return the Whit- ney Goverument to power in 1905 are corning back. Young Ontarians are marching under the flag of the new Liberalism. "History shows that whenever a real issue has divided the people somethin approaching a debacle almost always happens. It was so in the federal arena in 1878 and again in 1911, an there are many parallels to be found across the sea. New party lines were formed and members returned for con- stituences regardless of the riding's for- mer poiitical associations. Big majori- ties on one side gave way to still larger majorities on the other, and an entire revulsion of feeling characterized tete register of the people's will. [tis some- thing akin to this that is going to happen on June 29 " In Toronto, which was regarded as hopelessly bcund to one party, things are happening which are making the out -line politicians giddy. A man is nominated by the c onservatives and he comes out and supports three ;articles of the Rowell platform - tax reform, abolish the bar, and votes for women. The old oracles are dumb. The old partisan explanations are thrown an the scrap -heap. Liberals are as much as- tonished as Cowervatives by these manifestations of the working of new forces in the public life of the country Rev. H. W. Crews, President of the Hamilton Conference of the Methodist Church in speaking at a mass meeting in Woodstock in the interests of N. W. Rowell, said: - Mr. Crews declared his presence for the first time upon a politi- cal platform as a respoese to the call of duty. Born of Conservative antece- dents, and heretofore a supporter of the Whitney Government, he was at the meeting to give Ms personal endorsement of the proposal to "abolish the bar" in Ontario. Disclaiming to represent either Church or party, he branded as false the statement that the Liberal leader was insincere in his proposals. "But," he went on, "if our Churchss are sincere in the stand they have taken, we cannot do anything else than back up this man. I feel, Mr. Chairman, that I would be a traitor to the cause of temperance if I did not stand by Mr. Rowell, in his advocacy of the abolition of the bar." (Hear, hear.) "Shame on the Church and the tomperance people if they do not support, this man, who has staked his public life on the abolition of the open bar." In Ontario the voice of protest has been silenced by means of a voting majority. Campaign contributions under questionable conditions were re- ceived on behalf of the Government, but they eould lest be required into by reason of the majority. The Govern- ment escaped not on its merits, but by reason of the goodwill of its friends. Public confidence has been shaken by the failure of the Attorney -General's department to take action in cases where duty appeared plain. The al- legation that political favorites can go far without fear of Government inter- ference looks es thoegh justified by what occurs. The Attorney -General is a be- liever in the mestere): policy of inactiv- ity. -Ottawa Free Press. Orr, Gorrie, formerly of the Park House, thts town, has purchased Messrs. Rogers & Co's livery in this town. He has leased his hotel in Gorrie. The High School Entrance and Public School Leaving examinations will be held in Wingham Public School on the 2eth, 29th and 80th of this month. Arrangements are being made to in- corporate a company to purchase the ohnston prairie for a parks Ail the stock required has been subscribed, The company will erect a bridge across [Ottawa Free Press. One of the many telling points in Mr. Rowell's opening campaign address at Toronto was his reference to agriculture, which under the Whitney Government has been shamefully neglected. It would almost appear that Sir James regards the farmers and their interests with contempt. This is a matter with regard to which jokes are strangely out of place and yet the minister and deputy minister of agriculture are little better than jokes. Mr. Duff regards the continued depopu- lation of the country side with complac- ency, while his deputy lacks the personal experience which alone can render work in the department efficient. How the farmers must regret the days of the Hon. John Dryden when agriculture in Ontario occupied the position it ought to fill and when Ontario set an example, that other provinces were only too glad to follow. If Mr. Rowell has his way, those palmy days will return. He realizes, as every thoughtful man must realize, the overwhelming importance of agen culture in Ontario, not only in the rural distriets but in the cities, and if return- ed to power pledges himself to take irn mediate steps to place the depertment on the footing it ought to occupy, and which it never ought to have lost. Mr. Rowell's pledge is plain and distinct and if the electors wish to see it carried out they know what to do to make it effec- tive, =...-112ildren Cry 4 Neel vtite a el :n • ee*.: th • , tDRrLETCHER'S perinee or i'fLAI yo.(0;t:••••;i'1" --r- eg FR 1 A iiSkt`: ff;i• tt111,) kgiS. • •••• • l:t ft a1 iremiry ire° the ections of I int . 'the insincerity on the part of many Whitney supporters who use this argu- ment is shown in the fact that though; they would abolish the shops also in favor of prohibition, they, at the tame; time argue that the government is "go. I ng fast enough" its far as temperance i legislation is concerned. THE REAL ISSUE. says that is deceiving himself. The issue of the abolition; Sir James White f (Toronto Star.) The talk of bilingulaism is an effoi t to draw a red herring across the trail. An ardent temperance advocate does not like to vote against the aboilition of the bar. So he is told that the abolit- ion of the bar is not the real isssee, but that he must declare himself as against bilingual schools. But the man who nay is against t. ut the abolition o bilingual schools is proposed neither by the Government nor by the Opposition. Both declare that English must be taught; neither would banish French from the schools. The question is one of regulation not of abolition. One thing at a time. The abolition of the bar is the issue to -day. It is estimated that Saskatchewan has now 400,000 swine, an iticrease of 25 per cent during the past year. APhT MATSUI) 107n. The result of the election will be a test of their influence. This is their opportunity, and this also, is their time of trial. The talk of bilingulaism is an effoi t to draw a red herring across the trail.
