A brief information evening about the Port Franks Are'a'I'urtle Monitoring Pro- gram is being held on 'Thursday, April 25, 2013 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Port Franks Community Cen- tre at 9997 Port Franks Road. "We really appreciate all the local residents who help keep us informed about the turtles they see," said (lope Brock, healthy Watersheds 'Technician with Ausable Bayfield Conservation. "Turtles are a vital part of the eco- ogical system in the area and it is mportant to know what species are lore, in what nmbers, and what tabitat they are using, so we can tele protect then(;' The Port Franks Turtle Monitor - ng Program has been taking place for three years. The number of turtles and turtle species in Ontario is declining. For instance, some people may S('(' it common snapping turtle and won- der why that species is listed as Special Concern under the Ontario Endangered Species Act, 2007 and Special Concern under the federal Species at Risk Act. Snapping tur- tles can live to lw 70-81) years old, and females do not begin to lay eggs until they are 17 to 19 years old. 'lhe likelihood of offspring sur- vival in turtles is very low, which means that a female turtle will have to lay many eggs over the course of her life for just one of her offspring to survive. Slow reproductive rates and tow survivability, combined %vit11 threats such as habitat decline, increased predation of eggs by rac- coons or skunks, and road mortal- ity, may cause snapping turtle pop- ulations to become threatened or endangered if these threats continue. Residents will learn more infor- mation about this species, and other species of turtles, at the talk, as well as receive an update on the program from last year. On April 9, 2013 In the late afternoon, a Lanlbton Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer noticed a Chevrolet vehicle being operated In the Bright's Grove area of Sarnia and a quick computer check of the licence plate revealed that the plate did not belong to that particular vehicle. The OPP officer Initiated a traffic stop to further Investigate and the officer noticed that apparently a black marker had been used to alter the validation tag on the licence plate.
