Society Iearned
why the Soil Pool Shares secrets of success
Web is so important
The Grand Bend & Area Horticul-
tural Society was totally enthralled
by their recent presentation from
Tom Page, co-owner of Ontario
Growers Supply Located in London.
They are indoor / outdoor garden
experts and he shared many great
ideas about alternatives to pesti-
cides and organic products for the
natural gardener. We learned that
the Soil Food Web (SFW) refers
to complex and highly organized
sets of interactions and processes
among plants, bacteria, fungi, pro-
tozoa, nematodes and other soil
microbes. How does the SFW apply
to gardening you ask?...It creates
better nutrient retention; improved
soil structure; better defense
against pests & disease; influences
soil PH and the soil microbiology
can take care of pollutants...these
are just a few of the reasons why it
is so important. Suggestions to help
promote the SFW were to hand
,pick weeds or use a home-made
horticultural vinegar. Also by using
compost and compost teas along
with natural fertilizers, aid and
encourage the SFW. It was interest-
ing to hear that plants are so smart
that they, attract what they need to
survive and thrive, He provided
great handouts for everyone and
was very helpful to those with
questions.
The business portion of the
meeting started by welcoming a
few more new members and was
filled with quick reports and
updates. Everyone was encouraged
to check out our website: http://
www.gardenontario.org/site.php/
gbend/about/. Judy McDonald,
President gave an overview of the
upcoming Membership Drive. In
addition to the general member-
ship, the Society is introducing a
commercial membership for 2013,
with a goal of 75 new members.
Some of the great benefits include a
certificate of recognition, links on
our website, featured on our Face -
book page, and thanked at each of
our general meetings. Judy
thanked everyone for attending
and encouraged them to mark their
calendars for April 29th when
speaker Grace Dekker will be
speaking on Garden Styles. Every-
one is welcome to attend.
