Who does what in government?
Lynda Hillman-Rapley

With so many local issues, it is diffi-
cult to figure out what tier of govern-
ment is responsible for what concern.
Canadian politics is divided into
three, sometimes four levels of govern-
ment. With four tiers, federal, provin-
cial, county and municipal in many
cases taxpayers don't really know who
does what.
With top issues of the day being san-
itary sewers, wind turbines, cell towers
and small business- the rate payers
don't know who to he marl it, who to
bla nw, who to thank.
'Illy Federal Government is responsi-
ble for issues that concern the country
as a whole. Defense, criminal law,
employment insurance, postal service,
census, copyrights, trade regulation,
external relations, money and banking,
transportation, citizenship, an Indian
affairs. The leader, Stephen Harper is
the Prime Minister, and our numbers
of parliament (MP) are Bev Shipley in
Lampton Kent Middlesex and lien Lobb
in Iluron Bruce. The party in power
now is Conservative and both these
members are conservative.
The Provincial/'Territorial govern-
ment is responsible for ministries such
as Aboriginal Affairs, 1 lealth and Long -
Term (:are, and Education; the province
looks after property and civil rights,
administration of justice, natural
resources and the environment, and
welfare. Some responsibilities are
shared between both provincial/terri-
torial and federal government.'1he Pre-
mier, presently Kathleen Wynne is the
person who leads the provincial/terri-
torial government. Our Iocal Members
of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) are
Monte McNaughton in Lampton Kent
Middlesex and Lisa Thompson In
1 luron Bruce. 'Ihe party in power pres-
ently is Liberal and both of these mem-
bers are the opposition -Conservative.
'Ihe boundaries of a county usually,
but not always, are made up of town-
ships or other municipal corporations.
Both Lampton and Iluron have
