constantly crying' that the evil tenet in-
evitably be wiped 'it. This month the
question is tno domiaant aleue in the
provincial election. What are hard -1
thinkieg Canadians going to do about I
is? A nioral issue in palitice how are
we going to face it?
The facts are these; There are in
Ontario 1300 open bars and ..O9O9 open
shops. Because of the three Cattle'
handicap Local Option is admittedly of
little avail in the large centres. Yet
the Whitney government still persists
that that is its policy. Without ques-
tion, the policy has served good pur-
pose, But it can go practically no fur-
ther.
The Rowell policy is as followa: THE
CANCELLATION OF ALL BAR AND
CLUB LICENSES. THE SHOP LIC-
ENSES TO BE DEALT WITH BY
LOCAL OPTION AND A STRAIGHT
AJORITY.
Mr. Rowell promises to bring in his
measure at the first session. It could
be Ian in Ontario within eighteen
months,

temperance principles is there any
other way than to vote with the Libel--

MR. HANNA'S ISSUE.
(London Advertiser.)
The bar to heaven
The door to hell;
Whoever named it,
Named it well.
That is the issue in this Ontario elec-
tian of yours, Mr. Hanna? Aren't you
proud of it?
It seems to The Advertiser that a lot
of the good men of the party you boss
are not with you in this election.
You tried to fool the temperance
people in Huron County, and then you
thought it a matter of expediency to
bring on an election. Your position in
the Huron matter, and in the Snider
matter, made tlae issue of this cam-
paign. There was not a single other
thing vpon which the Government could
appeal for a mandate. You have smoth-
ered, or tried to smother, the other big
issues. You refused to allow your con-
duct to be opened to the country.
nu have chosen the bar as the issue.
You have flaunted your prison farm in
the face of the country. You think it
a wonderful thing to have constructed
a sort of purgatory for the product of
the barroom. You have said that men
would make greater brutes of them-
selves if the licensed bar was closed.
You have insulted every decent man in
Ontario when you told the:country that
it wouldLbreak the law and beceme
more besotted if the easy oath to ruin
were removed.
Your prison farm is a hospital for the
broken-down of humanity, all very well
in it way. But you should be ashamed
of it, rather than proud of it. You
should ba ashamed of every prison and
every asylum that houses the human
output of the liquor traffic. Yet you
boast of them. For shame, Mr. Hanna.
Norman Angell says it would take

conquer the 'United States:

A weak Chested Boy.
"My boy Frank seemed weak -chested
and took a very severe cold," writes
0. Stevens, Ninga, Man. "The many
medicines used did not seem to benefit
him, until we tried Dr. Chase's Syrup
of Linseed and Turpentine and found it
to be exactly what was wanted to cure
him." No treatment is so thorough
and effective as a cure for croup and
bronchitis.
NORTH HURON CAMPAIGN.
The Whitney Government has set the
date of the Provincial election for Mon-
day, June 29th -three weeks frcm next
Monday. The electors of North Huron,
Liberals and all supporters of Leader
Rowellnand the candidate, Mr. J. G.
Anderson, will need to do active work
during the next three weeks in order
that the riding may be redeemed. Mr.
Anderson is an ideal candidate. He has
been a meinber of the Legislature for
three sessions and is well posted on the
questions of the day. In his home town
of Lucknow and district he is highly
esteemed. He is a successful business
man and has for years been a member
of the Methodist Church and is one of
the officials of the church. In Decem-
ber, 1911, when the Liberals were dis-
organized, he won South Bruce by a
majority of 305. Bruce county commit -
and a serious offence in 1911 in electing
three Liberals and at the last session
the gerrymander was put through and
Mr. Anderson forced out of his old rid-
ing. North Huron Liberals were for-
tunate in securing Mr. Anderson as
their candidate. He is a native. of Ash-
field and is more at home in North
Huron than he would be in South Bruce
as that riding is now constituted. Con-
servative candidates are seeking election
in ridings in which they do not reside
and why any objection to a Liberal fol-
lowing the same course. The non-resi-
dent talk is very small politics. The
Liberals and some Conservatives are
well pleased with their candidate and
with united work we)ook to see Mr.
Anderson the next member for North
Huron.
THE REFORMERS' OPPORTUNITY.
(Toronto Star.)
A time arrives in the history of every
Government when its reforming energy
or its hold on the people begins to de-
cline, and when it would do well to step
aside. Such was the condition of the
Conservative Government at Ottawa
brfore 1806. Such was the condition of
the Liberal Government of Ontario be-
fore 1905. Sach is the condition of the
Ontario Government to -day. No Gov-
ernment ever does step aside in such a
case: and it would not be reasonable to
expect any Government to take so philo-
• sophic a view of its own position. It
hopes against hope. It refuses to see
the rising tide of the public opinion
which will sweep it from power. It is,
perhaps, notaltogethercolpable because
' it fights to the 1 last-
