6 Lakeshore Advance • Wednesday, March 13, 2013 • Venue,y times to change for Lambton Shores meetings Lambton Shores council member Doug Bonesteel would like to see day meetings in the name of staff. Council member Dave Maguire wants night meetings so the public can attend. At the March 4 meeting council discussed the use of the Legacy Centre for council meetings so the Thedford Seniors could take back their hall. In a report from Carol MacKenzie, municipal clerk, she said, "After reviewing the site, it was determined that moving the meetings to the Leg- acy Centre would be an excellent option for Council to consider, and could be accommodated with minimal costs." Once this was established council said this would be a good time to discuss when the meetings would be held. Bonesteel said he had an interesting conversation with the South I luron mayor George Rob- ertson at a recent event they both attended. Bonesteel said the mayor asked hint why they (Lambton Shores) were having their meetings at night. "You should have then/ during the day, they are business meetings," Bon- esteel quoted Robertson as sug- gesting. Ile said by having day time meetings they would not be burning out the staff or paying more for consultants coming in. "1 think we have to be flexible and I think we should lookat this for staff- they are long meetings -- and this is a long day for staff." Bonesteel said, "'This is a business and we have to make business decisions.) think we need to be far more considerate ofhowwedothis-ever yone else around us- have them (meetings) during the day," said Bonesteel. To that Council member Doug Cook said, "You never cared about staff before." Bonesteel then, asked Cook to with- draw that comment, stat- ing it was "really uncalled for" and Cook retracted his comment. Council then discussed the tim- ing, if they could do the meetings in three hours and it was established. Mayor Bill Weber said Thursday nights were available at the Legacy Centre and this day would be better for staff to get the agendas out, and to the newspapers and for staff questions before the weekend. Ile said that day also did not interfere with holiday Mondays. As was Bones- teel, council member Lorie Scott was under the impression the costs were higher if the meet- ings were at night. "Staff conies out and we have to pay them- consultants come out and we have to pay them this (day meet- ings) would cut the costs." Bonsteel said it was about staff efficien- cies and cost savings. "... Just changing dates we are not looking at costs - we are bringing in con- sultants, paying staff over time.../ can't support the motion." Acting CAO Janet Fer- guson told the Lakeshore Advance, "Administra- tion staff are salaried. Job descriptions identify the expectations of hours and meetings if neces- sary. Typically salaried employees that are expected to attend meet- ings have that reflected in their base pay and therefore is no in -lieu time." "Typically when con- sultants deal with Munic- ipalities they are aware of when meetings are and their fee is all encompassing to provide their service. 1 have not noticed it being broke►• out in the past." dbi Maguire asked if they get charged a levy from consultants coaling to night meetings and treasurer Janet Ferguson said no. Deputy mayor Elizabeth Davis-Dagg said she thought staff has gotten used to working in this time place and council has too, but sug- gested maybe they could begin earlier. She also asked that the sound sys- tem be fixed before they snake the move and Brent Kittnler, Director of Community Services said they were currently working on that. Council agreed to 'Thursday nights at 6 p.m. They will also continue with the Tuesday daytime meet- ings. 'There will be public notices when the changes take place.
