Ah the life of a skating teacher. Marg
Carey was coaxing a reluctant, crying
Canskate (Stage 1) member of Parkhill
Silver Blades onto the North Middle-
sex Arena ice for his role in the storied
musical Grease.
Didn't work! 1 Iv and another equally
shy guy stayed behind the curtain as
the rest of the Grease football team
performed the third of 17 arts in the
club's annual carnival. Other elements
of the immensely popular stage show
included Summer Lovin: Pink Ladies,
Greased Light Waitresses, Beauty
School Dropouts, Principal McGee,
Rizzo and Car Race.
Mount Carmt'1-based club roach
Marg Carey has taught generations of
young skaters. "1 have been a coach
since 1971 hut seems like yesterday,'
she told 'Ihe Advance.
Carey added Parkhill to her teach-
ing repertoire in 19711. "I taught It'na
McLellan, this ye'ar's Silver Blades
showcase chair, in Exeter when she
was her daughter's age and taught
with costume chair Melissa Jones's
aunt with the help of her mom Wendy
Moir in Parkhill in the late 1990's.
Moir? One of Marg Carey's nephews
is Scott Moir who, with partner 'Tessa
Virtue, have been golden in Olympic
and World ice dancing.
"'There are three young skaters in
the club who remind me during the
Olympics and World figure skating
championships that they are also
related to Scott Moir," said Carey.
"'They are (.illy Moir,•1)akota & Zoe
Jones, Gord and Wendy Moir's
grandchildren."
In addition to drawing members
from North Middlesex, the Silver
Blades roster includes skaters from
Mount Carmel, (;rand Bend, Port
Franks, Medford and Arkona areas.
Another Silver Blades coach, Kath-
erine Malcoltn, wasn't pr'ese'nt Febru-
ary 16 to share in the credit for the car-
nival. "She is a university student and
is 00 a southern vacation, a Christmas
present from her parents," said Carey.
\V' are very fortunate to have Kather-
ine working with us.'
Freelance coach Charlotte Mclean
was in the audience. "Her son Paul
was the guest skater; Carey told this
reporter. "Paul also partners our skat-
ers when tht'y try their dance tests."
An Advance reporter recalled enjoy-
ing a Silver Blades performance of
Grease' nearly two decades ago. "Good
memory! My youngest daughter was
in this carnival. 1 believe it was 1995,"
said Carey.
