it is doubtful if my international read-
ers know of Eeaussines or even heard
its name. It is a pretty little city in
the Freneli speaking part of Belgium,
whose chief industry is stone -quarrying,
From the tourist point of view, it is a
sufficiently interesting place. lts old
'asnow owned by the noble D'Aren-
b e rg family, conteins among other things
2 sculptured fireplaces, one of which
represents Adam and Eve. in Paradise.
A visit to the stone quarries is very
interesting.. The church contains tombs
of the Middle ages, which the inquiring
person does not pass by. In the neighbor-
hood, worthy of being placed on canvas,
are places called "Rocks of the Beauti-
ful Ladle...," and "The Hole of the Fairies.'
But shall not describe these because
1 have wtitten this little article only to
acquaint you with an odd festival
occurring, in that interesting city every
year on Whit Monday. In 1903, 90
young women, of that place, vertifying
the lack of appreciation of marriage by
their fellow townsmen, decided, in
spite of public prejudice and ridicule, to
establish an association having for its
aim the organization of a lunch for the
purpose of becoming acquainted with
each other, to which were invited the
bactielors of the whole world. Posters
and principally newspaper articlee in
great number, brought to the lunch an
immense crowd of marriageable and in-
quisitive men, not only from Belgeim,
out also from France, Holland, Ger-
many, etc. On account of the success-
ful result, the asociation have continued
annually the holding of a like festival,
and this year, for the 12th time, there
will occur this sensational meeting.
Pouring out from all railway trains,
the bachelors of all ages are received
at the City -hall by the Lady President
of the Association and after registering
in the "Golden Book", they visit the
city sights, awaiting the beginning of
the festivities, Flags, flowers, paper
garlands ornament the streets, across
which ih many different places, are
cloth streamers, on which notices are
written, for example, "wenconen",
between two pairs of doves, billing and
cooing. Upon another is written the
following strange phrase, "Not by
sucking your thumb will you find a
wife". This means, you will not find a
wife, unless you get busy about it
In the 'afternoon, af ter firing off gun-
powder &c., which they call in Valon,
"campes," there take place a proces-
sion of the candidates for marriage, the
reception by the committee, the intro-
ductions, followed shortly by the fam-
ous lunch An immense table has been
erected in the middle of the public
square, upon which are cups in great
number, oraamented with all sorts of
decoration and most varied names of
women. The tablecloth is paper. A
company of servants with a serviette
on the shoulder prepare the table ser-
vice. Soon the young women, on this
occadon most elegantly dressed with
artistically arranged hair, accompanied
by their guests are seated, crowded on
each side of the table. With rapidity
the coffee is poured out and the wait-
ers bring "mastelles," which are es-
pecially prepared pastry of the region.
The wooing young folk eat with excel-
lent appetites. After the meal the
lady president in agitated voice reads
a long speech extolling elevating mar-
riage love. The president of one of the
young men's societies present thanks
her and finally one of the charming
members of female society in Ecaussines
present him with a bouquet, which he
receives in a manner not less emotional
Cuncerts, an open air ball, contra and
round dances afford an opportunity
for the. enamored ones to converse till
evening, Then in the electrically -light-
ed city is danced more rapidly the galop
of the "resisting bachelors" as the pro-
gram calls them, while betoothal kisees
are exchaaged m the shadow. Altho
this gala day seems somewhat of a joke
hmm
at number reain- ;statistics prove that it has attained its
lee Te,ente. ',ain't. Prior to 1903 in Ecauesines there
h , le,J•710 tares in emit occurred only about 10 weddings yearly.

A NAVAL SERVICE WITHOUT SHIPS
To have a naval service without ships is
the latest scheme of the Borden Govern-
ment. Tile policy is not to be submit-
ted to Parliament but is being brought
into effect by the order-irecouncil meth-
od of government. By following this
method the miaisters hope to avoid the
discussion of the naval question which
would be certain to take place if the
service - without -ships' policy were
brought forward in the Commons, and
a parliarnental y review of its record on
that question is one of the last things
which the Government wishes to be
made.
What the Ministry propose to do is to
esteblish naval reserve conmanies in
different pertions of Canada and train
race in seamanship, boat drill and pre-
lireinaty naval exercises -but without
building any ships, for the Premier and
his colleagues still cling to their "Can-
ada Can't" idea in regard to ship-
building. The policy wiil have several
merits frotn the Government's point of
view. For one thing, it will be accept-
able to all the Nationalists who have no
objeetion to a naval service which does
not send men to sea. For another thing.
it will be cheap, costing about $200,000
a year, end Hon. L. P. Pelletier, a
member of the Government, is on
record as having commended in Parini-
rnent a naval policy which would be
cheap. The scheme wid also have some
political advantage for the Government,
since what money is spent may be ex-
pended in the localities where it may
be counted upon to do the mast good for
the party.
And hest of all, from the Borden
point of view, the adoption of the
seheme will give the Govetment an op-
portunity of melting it appear that
something ie really being done in the
way of naval action although it will re-
quite many 041113P:de words and much
extiangeration to convey the impression
fact enything worth while is intented.
Meanwhile, Canadians can %peculate it a
to wliether or not a navel service with-
out ships will go very far tow.ard meet

by local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way tocure deafness,
and that is by constitutional remedies.
Deafness is caused by an inflamed con-
dition of the mucous lining of the
Eustachian Tube. When this tube is
inflamed you have a rumbling sound or
imperfect hearing, and when it is en-
tirely closed, deafness is the result, and
unless the inflammation can be taken
out and this tube restored to its normal
condition. hearing will be destroyed
forever; nine cases out of ten are caus-
ed by Catarrh, which is nothing but an
inflamed condition of the mucous sur-
faces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars
for any case of Deafness (caused by
catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall's
