Lynda Hillman-Rapley

Communication and education is key, says long
time businessperson Mary -Jo Schottroff-Snopko
at the end of last week's Grand Bend Chamber of
Colllilleice annual general meeting.
Snopko said that businesses and service groups
need to work together to help each other. "We all
need to be ambassadors,' she said adding every-
one should he promoting the area. Snopko says if
you have an event let the hotels and motels know.
if you have a menu from your establishment- drop
it off.
Second generation owner of the Pinedale Motor
Inn, a 35 -year establishment in Grand Bend,
Snopko agreed with Laura Boogeman from Blue -
water Motel and Chris Holder from Ausable inn
that there is a lot that can be done so there are
rooms available when they need them.
Snopko said they all %yant to offer the whole
package to their guests -and that can only be a win-
win for other businesses. She sai(1 there needs to
be an education process because this community
is in competition with every place, every event.
Another ISStle for some was that last year two big
events Were held on the same weekend and there
were many people who could not get accommo-
dation. In that regard Boogemans said there
should he something in place so there is no dou-
ble hooking.

message to others, and help bond our

palities. Mills says working with Forest
for a general enthusiasm about what we
have to offer is a great \vay to Work
together.
There has been discussion within our
community for a number of years
regarding the need for a iambton
County brand. Now a coalition of com-
munity partners believe the time is
right, and has conte together to make it
happen. 'the final brand and its imple-
mentation plan will be presented by
Summer 2013. This, however, will he
just the beginning of implementing the
brand and the start of an educational
process for all on how to incorporate
our brand into our thoughts, words, and
materials.
In the tourists report centered on
2012's weather being fabulous for beach
goers but not so much for retailers.
Feedback was received about the high
cost of parking and zealous parking
ticket issuance. The report stated there
is a need for communication tools iden-
tifying how the parking fees were being
used, especially in connection with the
standards of maintaining a Blue Flag
beach and marina. 'Perhaps signage
explaining how the costs f parking lots,
beach and main street improvements
were being off -set parking fees might
help educate tourists, residents and
businesses.'

Grant policy on the way for county council
Paul Cluff
OMI Agency
i loran County Council has decided
they need guidelines on how to deal
with grant proposals.
•ihe county was handling each request
as they came ill but it Was agreed at the
Feb. 20 Committee of the Whole Day
Two meeting that 50 nit' structure is
required going forward.
CAO Brenda Orchard said it is impor-
tant for council to have historical data
on grants to various organizations and
individuals to help With the (decision
slaking process. "It is important to refer
requests to staff so we can provide you
with that information in a report."
Coon. Ben Van Diepenbeek (Ashfield-
Colborne- supported the
budget idea but noted that situations
arise, such as natural disasters, where
groups need money rather quickly.
Another option Orchard suggested is
setting a budget and reviewing grants
for the year, lvhile keeping some in
reserve.
Council has a soft heart sometimes,
noted Coun. Bernie Maclellan (Huron
East), and money may be going out too
quickly. MacLellan liked the idea of hav-
ing requests in by a certain time and
agreed money should be kept in reserve
for short -notice requests.
"We should never make a decision on
the day of request" he added.
Setting a deadline, though, could
snake it difficult for smaller groups, who
don't understand the position they are
in until they are hi trouble, said Coun.
John Grace (Stratford).
Coun. Joe Steffler (1 luron East) said
that applications should include some
sort of fiinancial status record. "1f they
have a hunch of money in the hank...
maybe they should use it."
Orchard said as it stands, the budget
doesn't identify a dollar figure for grants.
"When you deal With the budget issue,
that is something you should keep in
mind:'
MacLellan said county staff should he
able to develop a policy based on coun-
cil's discussion on the Issue.
