Plans for Family Day WinterFest South Huron are snowballing
into bigger, grander community celebration of winter season

Community groups in the South Huron area are coming
up with new ideas to help celebrate the best of wintertime
on the Family Day Iloliday Monday, February 18, 2013.
More than a dozen community groups are part of planning
the Family Day WinterFest South Huron celebration that will
add sotne new twists to a holiday event, with lots of old
favourites.
Volunteer George Finch said new events this year include
a try -out -curling -for -free open house hosted by the Exeter
Curling Club; Euchreama, and introduction to darts, both
events hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion, R. E. Pooley
Branch, No. 167; a Scavenger Ilunt hosted by the South
Huron Optimist Club; a Winter Bird Feeding Workshop,
courtesy of Friends of the South Huron Trail and
Miller's Country Store; and more new activities to
be announced shortly.
The new events are in addition to some
popular returning events such as the Exeter
Lions Club Breakfast; fireworks courtesy of
Trivitt Memorial Anglican Church and the
South Huron Fire Department - Exeter Station
Firefighters' Association; free family snowshoe-
ing
nowshoe .ing offered by the Friends of the South Huron
Trail and Ausable Bayfleld Conservation; free public
skating courtesy of Municipality of South I luron and Exeter
Lions Club; clowns and face painting by the Exeter Lioness
Club; a big -screen, G -rated movie co -hosted by Big Brothers
Big Sisters of South Huron and Exeter Elementary School;
tobogganing hill by the South Huron Roads Department;
outdoor skating (weather permitting) by the South Huron
Fire Department - Exeter Station; and more.
"When different groups and businesses each do some-
thing, the result is a bigger and better celebration of winter
attractions and community" Finch said.
This is the third year for the community -wide celebration
of the great outdoors and organizers say that "snow or no
snow$ there will be lots to do in the Exeter area. All -day
events include (weather permitting) tobogganing and out-
door skating. The holiday begins with the popular Lions
Club Breakfast.
"Hundreds of people enjoy the Exeter Lions Club Break-
fast on Family Day and we're happy to bring it back for Fam-
ily Day WinterFest South Huron in 20137 said Bruce Hodge,
President of the Exeter Lions Club. Doug Upshall, I.Ions
Club Breakfast Committee Chair, said the breakfast takes
place at South Huron Recreation Centre, 94 Victoria Street
East in Exeter, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. noon and admission is
registration is not required and there is an elevator
on site.
The Winter BirdFeeding Workshop takes place
at South Huron Recreation Centre at 11 a.m.
This year there will also be instructional darts
at the Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 167, Exeter,
from 12 noon - 3 p.m. The 'Learn from a Pro' darts is
downstairs in the Legion and is for ages 10 and up.
Lorne Rideout, Chairman of the Friends of the South
Huron Trail, said the volunteer community group is bring-
ing back some popular events like free snowshoeing. Volun-
teers from The Friends of the South Huron Trail will Join
with Ausable Bayfield Conservation to offer free family
snowshoeing at the South Huron Recreation Centre with
free rental from 12 p.m. (noon) to 2 p.m.'Ihis is a rare oppor-
tunity for people to try out snowshoes without having to pay
the normal rental fee. A limited number of both traditional
and aluminum snowshoes will be available at no cost. Par-
ticipants are encouraged to dress for the weather and wear
comfortable low-heeled boots. You are also invited to bring
your own snowshoes if you have them.
Family Day WinterFest South Huron continues with
events throughout the afternoon and evening.
'Ihe Exeter Curling Club is offering something new for this
year's Family Day WinterFest South Huron. The club is hold-
ing an open house to welcome people of all ages to try curl-
ing. 'Ihe open house takes place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Inter-
ested people are asked to bring a separate, clean and dry
pair of running shoes (not street shoes) and give curling a
try. 'There will be hot chocolate to warm you up.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Huron and Exeter Ele-
mentary School, with the sponsorship support of Starlite
Drive-in and Kraft Auto, will be co -hosting a big -screen,
G -rifted tnovie (Wreck-lt Ralph), at the school at 93 Victoria
Street East from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free and pop
and popcorn will be available for a small fee. Children and
youths are asked to bring indoor footwear and, if
they want, a blanket.
The South Huron Fire Department - Exeter Sta-
tion, with support from Trivitt Memorial Angli-
can Church, will hold a small fireworks display
at MacNaughton Park over Exeter Dam
(weather permitting, after sunset, at 7 p.m. sharp).
The display will he about 15 minutes in length.
There are numerous business contributors to the
community event as well as community organizations and
individuals, according to Finch. Stay posted to familyday-

tions to the WinterFest celebration schedule.
$7 for adults, $4 for children.
The Exeter Lioness Club will have clowns and face
painting from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at South Huron Recrea-
tion Centre. There is 'In Motion' free family skating at South
HurtSn Recreation Centre from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. thanks to the
Exeter Lions Club, JMR Electric, Jim Scott Enterprises, C.E.
Reid and Sons, and Municipality of South Huron. "Family
Day WinterFest South Huron is a wonderful chance for fam-
ilies to take part in 'In Motion' activities" said Darcey Cook,
Recreation Program Assistant with the Municipality of South
Huron.
The South Huron Optimist Club said Family Day Winter -
Fest demonstrates the community spirit that Is alive and
well in South Huron and area. "The South Huron Optimist
Club is pleased to be part of an event that reflects our
committnent to children, youth, and families," said
Johanna Calamusa, President of the South Huron Opti-
mist Club. "This year club members are hosting a
Scavenger Hunt and it takes place at South Huron
Recreation Centre from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and it is
free." There will be a goody bag for those taking part,
while supplies last.
Euchreama organizer Esther Hillman, of the Legion
Ladies' Auxiliary, said the euchre event offers "cards, and
friendship, and food." The event takes place at R.E. Pooley
Legion Branch, No. 167, at 316 William Street, Exeter, from
10 a.rn. to 3 p.m. The cost is $8 and that includes lunch. Pre -
