Help fund vital research to stamp out heart disease
Heart and Stroke Association
Friday is Feb. 1, and we know what that means: No, not the
groundhog thing, rather it kicks off 1 Ieart and Stroke Month in
Canada.
it also means it is the busiest month for the Canadian 1 leart
and Stroke Foundation in its efforts to fundraise for research
and medical development and to educate the Canadian
public about the risks of heart disease.
The foundation says this campaign is the key to reach
trillions of Canadians and alert them to risks of heart disease
and stroke.
According to the foundation, today, heart disease and
irWke take one life every seven minutes and 90% of Canadians
e at least one risk factor.
These include diabetes, high blood cholesterol,
hypertension, overweight/obesity, excessive alcohol intake,
smoking, physical inactivity, stress and even risk factors you
can't control such as age, gender, family history and
ethnicity.
Research has also taught us about the unique risk factors
facing women.
Cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke) is a
leading cause of death for Canadian women.
Younger women, says the foundation, tend to be
safeguarded from heart disease prior to menopause because
of the protective effect of estrogen, but contraception,
pregnancy and menopausal cycle make some females moire
susceptible to heart disease.
By canvassing, volunteers can educate Canadians door-to-
door with simple tips to reduce risk, and by pointing them to
further education via the website or even with the help of
their family physicians.
Opening the wallet also helps pay for that educational
framework and vital medical research.
"Our hearts and bodies are fragile and no one is safe from
the risk of heart disease and stroke.
"Yet, there is so much we can do to protect them. This is
why it is so critical we rally together in raising funds for
research that can help extend the lives of all Canadians," the
foundation says.
Like cancer, almost every family has been negatively
affected by heart disease.
It takes a concerted and monumental effort to snake a
difference.
And that effort starts on your doorstep.
if you can't help with the canvas, help with the wallet.
Please.
