Government of Canada invests to help recent graduates get jobs

post -secondary graduate to gain valuable skills and experience
needed to enter and succe't'd in the job market.

able Bayfield Conservation Authority (ARCA), just east of Exeter.
"Our government's top priorities are creating jobs, economic
growth, and long-term prosp eiity," Lobb said. "'I he Government of
Canada's Youth Employment SU ttegy is helping youth develop the
skills and gain the experience they need to get jobs now and pre-
pare for the workforce of tanwITow."
Ausable Hayfield Conservation is receiving more than $19,000
from the Career Incus pmgrtun to help a recent graduate gain on-
' -job experience in 1luron County and to apply the skills
aired through education to facilitate the transition to work.

tasks such as web programming and redesigning and improving a

us provide practical job skills to a young, post -graduate student;'
said 1 )ave Frayne, Chairman, Board of Directors, Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority. "1 his funding helps support our local con-
servation agency in the work we do."
An employee of Ausable Hayfield Conservation underlined the
pwSitive impact of the Government of Canada's Career Focus pro-
gram on youth when he described how the program had made a
positive change in his life. Rob Carnegie has now been working for
Ausable Hayfield Conservation Authority (ARCA) for almost two
years as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Assistant.1 le
learned the skills needed for his job thanks to the Career Focus
program.
"Before my employment here, I studied in a four-year program
called Integrated land Planning which is a blend (Aland use plan-
ning, landscape design, and GIS," he told a crowd that included
media and directors of the ARCA hoard. "1 limn graduating from
the program 1 found it miller difficult to find employment opportu-
nities. Most of the job postings I found required a minimum of two
yeas of working experience. That's when 1 was lucky enough to
come across a job posting here at the AIICA courtesy of the Gov -
eminent of Canada's Career Focus Program:'
The work experience Carnegie gained through the program
equipped him with the skills that earned him full-time
employment.
"Without the funding offered by Service Canada, this opportu-
nity wouldn't have existed for me and I wouldn't he standing here
today." he said at the announcement ceremony. "With that in
mind, I would like to extend my thanks to Service Canada and also
to the MICA for their support in the Career Focus Program."
Carnegie told those in attendance that through the Carrelllocus
program he had received support from fellow staff members and
learned from them On a daily basis.
"'Them is a vast amount of knowledge and expertise in this local
organiL ttion, and as such, I have learned a great deal alx)ut conser-
vation authorities and the work that goes on in this watershed" he
said. "1 am truly grateful for this opportunity and I look forward to
continuing aW work here:'
The new Career Focus position has been advertised e\'i(fely it
the watershed and following interviews the successful applicant
will lx' hired in the new year.
With annual funding of more than $300 minion, YES helps youth,
particularly those facing barriers to employment, obtain career
information, develop employment skills, find jobs, and stay
employed. YES includes the Skills I .ink and Career Focus progrnms
and the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, which creates thousands
of jot) opportunities for students every summer.
Economic Action Plan 2012 is providing an additional $50 mil-
lion over two years to enhance YES through a new initiative that
wil) connect young Canadians with jobs that are in high demand
and help them develop tangible skills and gain work experience.
Youth employment programs are part of the Government of
Canada's s broader strategy to create all educated, skilled, and flexi-
ble workforce. he Government underscored its commitment to
this strategy in Canada's Economic Action Plan. A key component
of the plan is to create more and better opportunities for Canadian
