Lakeshore Advance
For 21 years Marlene Desjar-
dine has been an integral part of
the library services in (rand
Bend. She will retire this week to
begin the next chapter in her
life.
Desjardine grew up not only
in (rand Bend, but also in the
louse that is currently Macl.ach-
• in Insurance Brokers 00 Cres-
cent Street. 1 ler dad Earl ('Prick)
Thompson owned the 1:SSl)
garage before Peter Warner and
way before it became the (;ill
Street parking lot.
Desjardine began her career
as librarian in the basement of
the school before it moved to
the Crescent street property
beside the post office. Rather
ironic that she will end her
career.this week as she began -
within the school.
The community rallied
together to come up with the
money for a much needed
library and the location was the
former Harwood Drugstore.
Once inside, circulation soared
as the accessibility became
handy for those people getting
their mail. Because of this their
hours extended and the age of
computers made library life
more of a challenge, but also a
great insight into the future of
library services. "Computers
have been such a positive
change,' she says.
At that time some of the
(;rand Bend school classes
made visits to the new library
and that custom would he
enhanced some years .later
when the library again moved -
this time to its permanent loca-
tion- hack at the school.
When the threat of a school
closure carie to realization- an
idea to move the library to the
school became a very real pos-
sibility, The county jumped on
hoard with the idea unci again
Desjardine and Smith moved to
the now newly built bigger loca-
tion. Now students in all classes
visit the library once a week and
the community has even better
access. Since the county library
system is so enhanced - you can
go on line and order your book,
do advanced searches, ask for
E -books and with the help of
Desjardine and Smith- your
book will he waiting for you.
•1n her 21 -years Desjardine
families grow and patrons using
the library from an early age -
anti continue as they get older.
She said they have been so for-
tunate to have pages like Amy
Jennison and John and Amanda
Noel work at their location. She
loves to see the tourists comet
back year after year- she will
miss that. She says her fondest
memories from the past two
decades have to he how appre-
ciative their senior patrons are.
"'They give us lists of hooks and
when they conte in the hooks
are here waiting," she said.
The library has always been
busy but not as it is today, espe-
cially in the summer with the
computers, wireless Internet,
students- this is a happening
place all year.
As yount; families stop by for
their favourite Christmas books,
and seniors stocking up for the
holidays a woman stops by to
pick up a book she has ordered.
She explains she •is leaving for
the holidays and wants to make
sure she has reading material.
Desjardine knows each name and what
book they are looking for. She knows
the next hook in the trilogy the woman
is looking for and apologizes h is not in
yet. 'this kind of resource is hard to find
and she will certainly be missed. But,
now in retirement, Desjardine can relax
and maybe even - read a book.
