Huron Country Playhouse Guild members learned about
turtle conservation during the August 23rd monthly meeting
held at Sand Hills Golf Resort in Port Franks. Christina Davy,
a University of Toronto PhD candidate and project leader of
the Pinery Provincial Park Turtle Project, shared her enthusi-
asm and love for turtles with the members. Christina indi-
cated that eight different turtle species are present in Ontario.
Seven of these reside in our community and are considered
endangered. Christina outlined the following ways that we
can help the turtles survive and hopefully thrive over time.

Roads are a significant cause of mortality in our turtle pop-
ulation. If you come across one of these slow moving ani-
mals, safely help it to the other side in the direction it is fac-
ing. Move it a metre, not a mile! If you see an injured turtle,
call the Pinery. Turtles are very hardy; shell injuries can be
repaired at turtle trauma centres. If you notice a turtle nest
with eggs, inform the Turtle Project staff so the eggs can be
collected, incubated and released safely back into the Old
Ausable Channel environment. Another way to make a dif-
ference is to donate to the Friends of the Pinery Park specify-
ing "Species at Risk. Turtle Project." Call the Visitor Centre at
the Pinery Park regarding turtle conservation, 519-243-1521.
Slowly but surely increased awareness and proactive strate-
gies will ensure that our turtle population is here for years to
come.
The business meeting followed the presentation. Doreen
McHarg provided a Guild Gala update. Only a few tickets are
