OPP Report
OPP pleading with drivers to take action
"It's time to snake better decisions
ktr behind the wheel" says OPP
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Commissioner Chris Lewis
says it's time for drivers to do what the ()PP is talking about.
"'the OPP does their best to provide insight and heighten
awareness on the dangers of distracted driving but so what?
The vast majority of drivers know it's dangerous. 'They hear
our safety messages but nothing changes because they have
not taken action. 1 lundreds of people have close calls every
day. 'they are consciously aware that they are making a poor
decision when they text or use their cell phone while driving';
said Lewis.
Distracted driving has been identified as a causal factor in
almost 5,0(0 collisions on OPP-patrolled roads and highways
so far this year. This is why from September 12 to 18, the ()PP
is following through on Week #3 of its 2011 distracted driving
campaign "Phone in One Hand, Ticket in the Other': "Our
goal is to give out as few tickets as possible" says Deputy
Commissioner Larry Beechey, Provincial Commander of
Traffic Safety and Operational Support. "Our goal is to
increase compliance with the existing Legislation and one of
the ways we do that is increasing the risk of being caught."
holding a device capable of texting or phoning while driv-

way Traffic Act (1ITA). Watching an entertainment device
can result in a fine of $110 under Section 78 of the 1 ITA. Other

The Huron ()PP is warning all area residents, especially
seniors and senior caregivers to be on the look out for con
artists. With the economic recovery stalling, we can expect
the scions to continue. Already this year, there have been
scams against the elderly by fraudsters posing as Water Puri-
fication Experts, ripping the victims for hundreds of dollars.

especially the elderly, selling products or services that
are of little to no value to the client. They are often very
pushy and rude and prey on those who are "weak" or liv-
ing alone. Another scam being attempted on the elderly
is the "grandparent scheme" or "emergency scheme':
'Ihe caller pretends to be a grand child that needs money
for to get out of jail near Montreal -- this scam has pried
thousands from elderly victims.

year that total is down to 35. As of July 31, 2011 the ()PP
initiated nearly 10,000 tickets for distraction. That's more
than double compared to 2010.
This week was selected for the campaign because it coin-
cides with the thousands of students returning to school.
Drivers need to he vigilant with children walking to school,
crossing busy streets and getting on and off school buses. It
is critical that drivers dedicate their full attention to driving.
OPP solutions to prevent fraud
1. Always get at least 3 quotes on any project around the
house regardless of the service or product being pur-
chased / sold.
2. Never sign a contract without checking the credibility of
the company or person selling the product or service. 3.
Elderly persons or those with little business experience
should never sign a contract without running it by a
trusted family member, friend or neighbour. 4. Never
fully open or unlock your door to anyone you don't know.
'Palk through a locked or secured door if you don't know
their identity. if you don't want them at your door tell
them to "go away': If they don't, call police. 5. Report
suspicious persons or activity to police immediately.
3. 'There is no magic to preventing fraud. If something;
sounds too good to be true or seems a little "weird" it
probably is. 'frust your instincts, not the stranger at your
door!
