A donor recognition and dedication
ceremony was held on 'l'tesday, August
23 to honour the acquisition of the
Triebner Tract, a 40 -hectare property
that is part of the provincially signifi-
cant Hay Swamp Wetlands Complex, an
area of natural and scientific interest
located in the Municipality of
Bluewater.
"The wetlands complex in the former
Hay Township is one of this area's most
important ecosystems and the acquisi-
tion of the Triebner Tract will increase
our ability to protect it," said Tom Prout,
General Manager and Secretary Treas-
urer of the Ausable Bayfield Conserva-
tion Authority (ARCA). "The ABCA has
called the property the 'Triebner Tract
to honour the family that owned the
farm for generations"
The farm has 12.5 hectares of worka-
ble farmland and 23 hectares of forest.
Wetland restoration and tree planting
took place on 4.5 hectares of the wettest
and least productive piece of farmland
in 2010 and 2011.
The total cost of the land acquisition
project was more than $250,000. ARCA
was able to acquire the environmentally
important property thanks to generous
contributions from the property's
former owner, the late Stuart Alexander
Triebner and family; and from individ-
ual donors Mildred Creech, a former
Stephen Township resident; and Fred
and Reit Willert, of Grand Bend; and
from other funding partners including
the Nature Conservancy of Canada (in
cooperation with the Ontario Ministry
of Natural Resources and Province of
Ontario Greenlands Program); Ducks
Unlimited Canada; ABCA; and Ausable
Bayfield Conservation Foundation.
