Bruce Power site raises S180,000 to support efforts In Goderich

Through a fundraising effort on the
Bruce Power site, employees, unions and
the company raised $180,000 In support of
recovery and rebuilding efforts in Goderich,
which was hit by a devastating tornado on
Aug. 21.
"I'm both impressed and thankful for all
the support for our comtnunity during this
challenging time," said Goderich Mayor
Deb Shewfelt. "This incredible generosity
from Bruce Power's employees is the larg-
est fundraising donation yet and we look
forward to putting these funds to good use
as part of our recovery and rebuilding
efforts. Bruce Power also continues to sup-
port our recovery efforts on the ground by
providing equipment, supplies and human
resources."
The $180,000 will be directed towards
the immediate recovery efforts underway
in Goderich and to support the
community's rebuilding efforts, specifically
the replacement of mature trees and repair-
ing damage to the town's beautiful down-
town core.

Goderich and I'm very proud our employ-
ees, unions and the company have pulled
together to raise a significant amount of
money in such a short period of titne," said

THE PROJECT
Dillon Consulting Limited has been retained by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to complete the Detailed
Design and Class Environmental Assessment (EA) for the rehabilitation of Highway 21 from Grand Bend north limits
northerly 7,5 km to 0,1 km north of Hendrick Road.
The proposed rehabilitation includes the replacement/rehabilitation of culverts and the resurfacing of the highway.
Other Improvements include the replacement of partial illumination at Highway 21 and Huron Road 83, and entrance
modifications throughout the project limits in accordance with MTO access management principles. Details on the
rehabilitation will be available on the project website

will be updated throughout the project.
THE PROCESS
This study will be carried out in accordance with the
requirements of the Class Environmental Assessment
(EA) for Provincial Transportat/on Facilities (2000)
(MTO's Class EA) as a Group 'B' project, One Public
Information Centre (PIC) will be planned to display
and seek Input on the proposed improvements. This
project has the potential to be 'stepped -down' to a
Group 'C' project subject to screening for significant
environmental Issues. Following the PIC, MTO will
decide if It is appropriate for the project to be
'stepped -down'. A notice will be issued providing
a 30 -day public review period of MTO's decision to
'step-down' the project,
COMMENTS
Comments and information regarding this protect
are being collected to assist MTO in meeting the
requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act.

during the project and may be Included In project
documentation. Information collected will be used
in accordance with the Freedom of information and
Protection of Privacy Act. With the exception of

of the public record.

'I'he fundraising effort on the Bruce
Power site consisted of a gate collection
that was thatched dollar -for -dollar by the
company. The two train unions on site,
The Society of Energy Professionals and
the Power Workers' Union, contributed
$10,000 to the fundraising effort, which was
also matched by Bruce Power.

A community hug
More than 800 people gathered on the floor of the Goderich Memorial Arena Saturday
morning for a community meeting to update residents on what happened, the next
steps required to restore the community and how to begin the healing process. Power
has been restored to about 95 per cent of the homes in town and gas service Is in
place to 65 percent of the homes. The Square remains closed. Mayor Deb Shewfelt
comforts Huron County Victims Service Executive Director, Shelley Dorey as she
tried to address the crowd at Saturday morning's community meeting. Dorey, who Is
coordinating victim services personnel from six area counties In providing emotional
support for residents, suffered her own loss in the tornado. About 40 volunteers are in
Goderich to provide emotional support and guidance.
