Ken was a dedicated councillor, mayor and warden. lie was a proud husband and father who enjoyed telling me about his family on our weekly trips to County Coun- cil,1)uring his time on council he achieved many things for this community and for these he will be remembered," says George Robertson, current South Huron mayor of Ken Oke who passed away last Thursday. Oke played many roles and held many titles throughout his life. Mayor of South Huron, warden of I luron County, a former councillor and a trained civil -engineering technologist -- Oke will be remembered by many as a loving hus- band, a doting father and a good friend, always there to lend a helping hand. "lie was the kind of person to slake you feel secure, loved and respected," said his widow, Susan Oke. Oke, who died suddenly'lhursday at (13, was born and raised its South Huron, where he was elected mayor in 2006. Ile loved giving hack to the community, and sat on many boards and associations, even as he ran a family farm. Ile worked in Middlesex County's road department and later served as councillor, mayor and warden. 1 lis wife of 40 years said it (didn't matter how busy he got, Ken always had time for family, hosting Sunday dinners for his three children and their families. lie traveled frequently with theta. 1 to also loved farthing, cooking and bak- ing and the family didn't mind taste -test- ing his recipes, said Susan. "t le was my soulmate, a great husband, a doting father, 1 wish 1 could have had hint for another 20 years," she said. Friends and colleagues will greatly miss Oke, said Michael 1)i Lullo, South Huron's clerk and manager of corporate services. "1 it' was a great man very personable, approachable and very easy-going. 1 le was well-respected in the community,' he said. 1)i Lullo said he fondly remembers council meetings during which Oke would often share personal stories at length, frequently going on tangents, and in the hest way pos- sible, derailing the discussion. "1 feel 1 can bring a different flavour to this position," he said and mealy who knew hint, knows he did just that. Chamber of Commerce to host round table discussions on parking and congestion. Grand Bend Chamber of Commerce Lakeshore Advance The Grand Bend and Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting three separate round table discussions on Parkiing and Conges- tion in Grand Bend. The meetings will be held at the Grand Bend Legion Monday August 29th at 9:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. 'The Chamber will he nloderatiing the dis- cussion. They are inviting all businesses, politicians, and residents who feel the issues need to be discussed and solutions need to he found. Participants will be sitting down with other stakeholders and engaging in a productive series of problem solving workshops. 'the volun- teers pictured below are the ones that do the Water sampling most mornings this summer. As part of a partnership effort between Rota- ry's (:lean Water Now committee and the municipality of Lambton Shores, the main Grand Bend Beach is tested 7 days a week by these 16 volunteers. Most mornings at about 8 null the volunteer samplers wade into the lake at 5 locations on the Grand Bend beach to take water samples - rain or shine. 'These are then sent by Lambton Shores to a lab in London for (;.coli testing. The Lambton County Depart- ment of 1 tealth does this function on Mondays but the local volunteers do this procedure the other 6 days a week during the main swimming season from the beginning of summer until Labour day. Although this program is coordi- nated by the Rotary's Grand Bend Clean Water Now committee, half of the volunteers are non - Rotarians.
