Pressing issues from
Port Franks discussed
Lynda Hlllman-Rapley
Lakeshore Advance
Council reviewe(t reports regarding two
most pressing issues in the Port Franks
area, ice management and boating traffic
on the Ausable River Cut.
Cut. The report outlined the history of
these issues, a long term strategy for ice
management and the short and long term
strategy in dealing with keeping the chan-
nel open for boating.
With regards to the boating traffic on the
Ausable River Cut, it was noted that staff
from
the Community Services Department
were able to identify a passage or channel
around the primary sedimentation area
that provides a consistent depth of 2,5 to 3
feet, sufficient to allow most boats to pass
up and down the river. This channel has
been marked with channel markers. Coun-
cillor Bonesteel expressed his disappoint-
ment that the Ministry of Natural Resources
would not grant an "emergency dredging
permit to allow a more safer boating chan-
nel along the "Cut" to the lake.
I.anlbton Shores has requested that
ARCA undertake a project to review and
update the Port Franks Ausable River Ice
Management Study Report (latest revision
September 2009). This review and update
will follow a proposal from AECOM Con-
sultants dated February 28, 201 1;
Lambton Shores agrees to pay 5(1 per
cent of the total costs for this work, the total
cost estimated at $40,510 plus 11S'1', with
the remaining 50 per cent being paid
through WEGI grant funding.
Staff was directed to continue to monitor
the water levels in the Ausahle River Cut, to
ensure that a reasonably safe passage for
watercraft is maintained as may be practi-
cal and safe;
