Grand Bend Community Foundation member
Pat Morden says Stephen Lewis has been one of
her idols since she first heard him speak when
she was 18. " It was a thrill to have hint come to
Grand Bend. Yes, he told us about some stark
realities in the world. In particular, I was struck
by his contention that climate change will have
cataclysmic results in the next 30 years. But I
also uplifted and encouraged to know that bril-
liant and passionate people like him are willing
to give so much of themselves to make change
happen. Surely we can all find a way to make a
contribution. I'm delighted that the Grand Bend
Community Foundation was able to sponsor this
event, and that our board members contributed
personally toward the sponsorship."
Morden gave kudos to the Rotary Club for
bringing Lewis to Grand Bend, and "for a
beautifully organized and executed event that
brought the community together in a very spe-
cial way."
Two grade ten students from New I lamburg
have been raising money for the Stephen Lewis
Foundation since grade seven. Noam Gold -
tilling and Callum Clarke have raised $4,000 and
continue to raise money for this cause. They
were thrilled to not only be at the event but to
meet Lewis. "Those two kids are "'Turning the
'fide—they are saving the lives of children in
Africa," said (:info,
After Lewis's presentation, one woman said
his speech was moving. "Lots has been done,
but there is much more to be done. I left feeling
mixed, sad for all the things wrong in the world."
She said she is pleased the Rotary Club has
made huge changes in third world countries, but
"overwhelmed with not being able to help."
As always, in his speeches, Lewis attenlptecj
set everything in the broad context of human
rights, and was able to argue that civil society
has emerged as the fundamental social agent to
secure those rights,
"We can't give up, we have to do something
says Ciufo. We are blessed -we are not power-
less. Ile just gets to you,"
'Ihe sponsors, including premier sponsors, the
Avon Maitland District School Board, NextEra
Energy Canada, and the Grand Bend Commu-
nity Foundation were crucial to this event in
many ways; most notably: they provided the
opportunity for nearly 100 students to attend.
