UWO students say Grand Bend health centre offers everything

Lakeshore Advance
A usual theme for first year medical
students coming to this area for
Discovery Week is usually one of sur-
prise at what there is to offer and Jen-
nie Gerasimoff and Jason Chan are
no exception.
The Schulich School of Medicine
and Dentistry kicked off Discovery
Week last week by heading to local
communities,
Discovery Week is a mandatory
part of the first year curriculum at
Schulich and is designed to offer
exposure to learning, living and work-
ing in rural and regional communi-
ties, Students interact with physi-
cians, allied healthcare practitioners,
patients and staff.
Both first years students were
impressed from the moment they
arrived at the Grand lend Commu-
nity I lealth Centre. This year they had
the largest number of students, 169,
ever participating in the rural and
regional communities throughout
Southwestern Ontario from Amherst -
burg to Tobermory.
Chan's grade six teacher thought
he would grow up to be an architect.
This Mississauga man had different
ideas. He was more interested in sci-
ence and health. The situation was
much the same for Gerasimoff, a stu-
dent haling from Tecumseh. She has
known since grade 11 Biology that
she wanted to work in health care.
The two UWO students thought
what Grand Bend's facility is far more
substantial in their services and pro-
grams and resources than many of
the bigger city facilities. "1 liked that
everything is integrated -working
together- this is not just a family
clinic," said Chan.
Gerasimoff would like to get into
family medicine and says the third
year there are many programs that
allows for more opportunities such as
Emergency Room work. She says that
will not restrict where she works.
Chan will specialize in neurology, a
love he has had since he decided on
medical school. Both students are
concerned about the aging popula-
tion and knows their knowledge in ,
geriatrics is important to their
futures.
Why medicine "
"1 love every aspect of healthcare,
said Gerasimoff adding she loves
iutrltlon and fitness and the body
nd how it works. She says working
with people snakes her do her best, "it
challenges me and I tend to contrib-
ute more." Chan says health care is
everywhere. "It impacts everything in
our lives, touches us in so many
ways." Chan says there are so many
ways to make a difference.
Staying motivated
Gerasimoff says she keeps moti-
vated by constantly thinking of the
big picture. 1 think about the end

goal and 1 imagine what it would be
like to be a doctor. 1 observe every-
thing and that drives me to do what-
ever it takes to get to where 1 ani
going." Chan says his motivation is
his keen interest in health care. He
loves that he has the opportunity to
learn more every day with incredible
role models. 1 -le says he appreciates
the team at the Grand Bend CHC and
the impact these people have on the
community. The two spent time in
both optometry and physiotherapy -
two settings they may not see without
participating in the SWOMEN. "This
is working in the field making
connections.
First year
Not as a surprise but as a realization,
Gerasimoff said the amount of informa-
tion they learn in a small atnount of
titne is staggering. She says she knew it
was going to be a challenge but once
you get there it certainly opens your
eyes to the complexity of keeping up to
date in medicine.
Chan also said no surprises but that
medical school made him appreciate
how diverse the spectrum is in terms
of medicine,
"Each person has his own story and
no disease is the same for any two
people." Chan believes that personal
aspect defines medicine.
