'¢ year marks the 30th annual for the
SJ ."herd Invitational Classic at Oak-
wood resort. The political, Sports and big
screen personalities have highlighted the
event while big supporters donate year
after year. The tournament has raised
more than $1 million for Community
Living and local charities since that first
tee -off.
Looking back
The Scatcherd family came to Oak-
wood in the early 1900s. They built a cot-
tage that has remained in the family. Col-
lin Campbell and Audrey raised their
children here. When David was 16, his
father died and the teen left the Bend for
Calgary. It would be 36 years before he
came back. With a wife and three chil-
dren; John, Colin and Helene- the David
and Valorie Scatcherd family settled into
life on the lake. In 1981 Scatcherd bought
the Oakwood resort. That same year the
Inspiration for the Scethcerd Classic
began.
The Classic
Its roots go back to a chance meeting
David Scatcherd had with Dave Blair, a
London school teacher. Scatcherd said
he was emotionally taken by Blair's com-
plete devotion to his daughter Jane , who
was physically challenged. One night
Scatcherd, over a case of beer at Blair's
house, hatched the idea of a charity tour-
nament. Scatcherd gave $5,000 to Blair to
get the tournament organized. Tears still
flow when Scatcherd tells that story 30
years later. The family has been a big part
of the tournament and Colin, now a
father himself, says when they were
young, him -and brother John were cad-
dies for the players (no carts in the begin-
ning). As the brothers got older they
began playing in the tournament. Their
sister can always be seen doing her part
helping out during the tournament.
David and Valorie's goal from the start of
the now 30 year old Classic tournament
has been to help unfortunate, disabled
and mentally challenged children.
The struggle for inclusion
long before the tournament began,
Audrey Scatcherd, David's mother
wanted to do something to help develop-
mentally and physically handicapped
children. Her daughter, David's sister,
Jane was diagnosed intellectually chal-
lenged and died at the age of 26.
The Association for the Help of Retarded
Children began in 1951 and was legally
incorporated on January 31, 1952. The
name changed to the Ontario Associa-
tion of Retarded Children and is now
known as the Ontario Association for
Community Living. Audrey was a
staunch advocate for this association.
Audrey left some money in her will and
David did not want to see those dollars
going to administration - he wanted
something tangible. His vision was for a
better quality of life for not only lane but
all the children with intellectual

challenges. That was the beginning of the a lifelong
vision for the Scatcherd family. Thanks to dollars,
support and future thinking from the Scatcherd
family, and to celebrate its 25th year of operation, in
1978, the Association opened a new Nursery School,
the Scatcherd Children's Centre on Sarnia Road,
London. In 2009 the opening of the Scatcherd Res-
pite Place in London was another credit to the
efforts of the annual tournament.
The meeting of strangers in 1981, resulted in not
only a three -decade friendship with the two I)aves,
but an event to help
so many people with
an element of fun
and lasting friend-
ships for hundreds
of people.
The two day tour-
nament will be held
June 6-7.
