Beware of online
recipes for `flammable'
homemade pesticides
Gardening safety tip
With the push towards more organic gardening,
many Canadian gardeners are turning to the
Internet for inspiration. But some online recipes
for homemade pesticides pack an unexpected -
and potentially flammable - punch.
According to Health Canada, recipes that call for
ingredients such as bleach, naptha, gasoline or
even kerosene are cropping up across the web,
with little in the way of warnings or proper usage
instructions. In a recent publication about
homemade pesticides, Health Canada points out
that while some recipes call for harmless ingredi-
ents (such as soap and water), recipes that include
fuels can pose risks to human health or the
environment if they are not handled or disposed of
properly.
Other possible risks associated with the prepara-
tion of these homemade pesticides include:
• inhaling harmful hones,
• eye and skin irritation,
• contaminating cookware and utensils typically
used to prepare food, and
• contaminating your clothing.
The only way to make sure that the pesticide you
use is safe and effective is to ensure that it's been
registered by Health Canada. The best way to
ensure that a product has been registered for use
by Health Canada is to look for a Pest Control
Products Act (or "P.C.F.") registration number on
its label.
Gardeners with questions about homemade
pesticides can call the Pest Management Informa-
tion Service at 1-800-267-6315, or read the article
in Health Canada's It's Your Health series on home-
made pesticides at www.healthcanada.gc.ca/
pmra. The website also offers up a wealth of
information on healthy lawns, pesticide use and
regulation, and pest control.
