The Grand Bend Community Foundation Environment committee in partner- ship with the Grand Bend Community Health Centre have created a demonstration communal garden for the 2011 planting season. Under the leadership of chair Harlie Johnston, the committee has been working on this idea for two years, and are very excited that it's happening, The CHC has contributed the land and with assistance from Miranda Burgess, who has experience with the Zurich community garden there will be a 20' x 30' raised garden. Volunteer Walt Michielsens has contributed a huge amount of time and materials, for this garden. Hayley Hartford of Earthly Designs will be designing and planting landscaping around the edge of the prden using native plants, designed to demonstrate what can be done with native plants. The goal is to be as organic and environmentally friendly as possible. There are plans for a compost heap and rain barrels, and Hartforf will be consulting with us on how to control pests organically. "The garden will be communal, with everyone taking a tum at weeding and watering and everyone sharing the food we produce," says committee member Pat Morden adding they plan to hold a harvest celebration in the early fall. Participants will pay 520 toward plants and seeds. To register call Frieda at 519-238- 2190. by May 14th, spaces will be limited.
