Lakeshore Advance, 2012-03-28, Page 14Midget Thunder wraps up season Outgoing supporter bids adieu Donna Cooper ( e The Thunder recently laced up their .di/skates for the last time in the 2010/2011 season during Game 5 of the recent Ontario Minor Ilocke.y Association (OMIIA) Finals. The Midgets played to a full stand- ing -room only crowd in Zurich, but came up a few goals short at the end of 45 minutes. It was a hard-fought series and a battle to the end for both teams. The first 15 minutes saw Man- vers get out to an early lead on the score board 3 goals. The second period saw a few glim- mers of hope when Zurich's Captain, Nick LaPorte, finally put the Thunder on the board with a goal at 9:26 assisted by Kurds Denomme and Braden Erb. Then followed up close behind by a goal at 9:17 from defence - man Greg Cooper unassisted, the momentum had shifted and Zurich was within two and closing the gap. Manvers had other plans and man- aged to get a few quick unanswered goals midway through the second to try and put the game out of reach, ending the second with a 7-2 lead. Zurich continued to battle in the cor- ners and worked really hard to get back hi this game and it paid off when Jordan Bloody Wanker darts are slzzflng For the Lakeshore Advance In the A division, the Bloody Wankers showed no mercy and shocked the top-ranked teams by winning 9 out of 10 games on the first night of playoff action. They have clearly set the pace and we will see next week who if any will rise to the challenge. Bloody Wankers 9, Wannabees 7, Jokers 5, Pointers 4, Bananas 3 and Sweet & 'Toxic 2. In the B division, the Duffers have the slight advantage with 7, Demoli- tion and The Social Club hot on their trail with 6, We Don't Care and NWO each with 5 and Scorpions 1. The C division has a batik going for first place with Sobey It, Holes & Poles and Riverbendovers all tied with 6, Purple Feet, Misfits and Brats each have 4. The 1) division is also battling it out with Sharpeye, Just lis and Shoreliners tied at 7, Toss & Go 6 and the mighty She -Devils 3. Last week of playoffs folks so make sure you practice up and show us what you can do! Dart League results For the Lakeshore Advance The results from the Grand Bend Dart League's third -annual Spring Doubles Tournament are as follows: First Place - Ryan Masse & Pete Clifford; Second Place - Lionel Walsh & Ivan Herrington; 'Third Place - Gord Carter & Chas McManus; Fourth Place - Jeff Batjko & Nick Regli. The League would like to thank all the participants in this year's tournament. Metzger's Meats earns rave reviews Lakeshore Advance Metzger Meats Products I4. are a cut above the competition, Indeed, the Metzger Meats Products crew recently took home the Platinum Award in the bacon category and a Sil- ver Award for their Broc- coli Pork Roast in the cold -cut category at the Ontario Finest Meat Competition recently held in Toronto. In all, the meat meet drew 140 entries from 21 Ontario processors and a list of "knowledgeable, influential judges," including retail buyers, media, chefs and home economists, were entrusted with the task of determining the Plati- num, (old and Silver award winners in each category. Also on hand to hon- our the Ilen'sall-based company on its win was Huron -Bruce MPP and Agriculture Minister Carol Mitchell. Brand, assisted by LaPorte, knocked in Zurich's third goal at 8:46, and then again when Colin Gingerich scored at 6:35, assisted by Brand. Time was not on Zurich's side, and the final 5 minutes ran out too fast, finishing the game 7-4. The fans were great and the team deserves a round of applause for a great season and giving area residents a season to remember. The 'Thunder had an amazing season record of 41 games played: 27 wins, 12 losses and two ties. High- est points go to Capt. Nick LaPorte, with total points earned of 74 (50 goals and 24 assists). As for myself, it has been an unbelievable 14 years of hockey but 1 wouldn't trade in those cold arena seats and the long drives home from who knows where for anything else. 1 also wanted to thank the Coaches and Staff for all the long hours volunteering your time and to the wonderful generous "fan" who catered the meal after the final game on Saturday.
