Kincardine fish derby off the books

The 26th Fish Kincardine Derby is officially
"off the books" after few volunteers or local
businesses showed interest in reviving or
funding one of the community's longest -run-
ning events.
Municipality of Kincardine manager of eco-
nomic development and tourism, Steve Mur-
ray, said without the organization of the event
already underway, time has run out to round
up organizers and raise enough funds to see
the May 11-20 derby a success.
"Even if volunteers came forward, there
isn't enough time, said Murray.
About $50,000 is typically supplied by the
municipality, along with the support of a five -
member committee and 10-15 volunteers
supporting the derby. Last year's 25th anni-
versary event saw winners take home two
ATVs for the top prizes, a change from the
$5,000 prizes for top trout and salmon in pre-
vious years.
Hundreds of participants flocked to Kincar-
dine during the "shoulder tourism season"
leading up the Victoria Day May 24 weekend
for the last quarter-century, providing an eco-
nomic boost to kick-off the tourism season for
local accommodator, restaurants, gas stations,
retailers and local shops in Lakeside Down-
town Kincardine, which uses hs unique loca-
tion overlooking the lake for tourism
promotion.
"Maybe some people will step forward
when they feel the effects without a derby," he
said. "lf there was volunteer support and the
business community stepped forward, there's
no reason we couldn't see it return"
Anglers will still have opportunities for their
prize-winning fish during the 28th annual
Chantry Chinook Classic, which will run July
23 -Aug. 7 out of Kincardine, Port Elgin and
Pike Bay.
