Road conditions on county website
CONTINUED FROM > PAGE 1
"'There's nothing worse
than had information," said
Steffler.
Laurie responded that the
OP updates the media when
roads close so the county
would concentrate on provid-
ing information about visibil-
ity and road conditions,
"Year after year, despite the
best efforts of everyone
involved, there is a systemic
failure to allow for clear
communication regarding a
given road's status as 'open' o1'
'closed: Additionally, the cur-
rent system does not provide
a clear and defined channel
for that saltie information to
be communicated to the pub-
lic in a timely fashion," said
the letter from Huron OPP
Staff Sergeant P.S. Johnson.
Johnson suggested that the
county webpage would be
one central location easily
accessed by the public.
"Even further, a fringe
benefit to this plan would be
increased flow of traffic to the
county website, thus a better
ability to communicate other
proactive programs that our
county is engaged in," said
Johnson.
Coun. Ben Van Diepenbeek
(ACW) complained that High-
way 21 is closed a lot during
the winter, often, in his opin-
ion, when it's "not that bad
out."
"They put the signs there
and they leave them there. If
you live on 1 iighway 21, it's a
major inconvenience. People
often phone me wondering
why it's still closed. It's an
issue with a lot of people," he
u11d.
Laurie said the county
receives similar complaints
but added that while the high-
way alight look passable, it
could be that there's an acci-
dent further up the road and
the police are trying to get a
truck pulled out of a ditch.

'Ihe snow blower had been chained to the deck at the res-
idence. The chain was somehow cut and the machine
taken. It is described as a red 8 horsepower 1 Ionda electric
start two stage snow blower. It has caterpillar tracks instead
of drive wheels and a fabric canopy to protect the operator
from snow. 'lhe estimated value when new was over $2,500.
'There are no suspects.
Sometime between the evening of the 15th of February
and the following morning, thieves entered a locked shed
located at a Eureka St, Forest address.
Entry was gained by prying an exterior lock to the
shed. Stolen was a new 26 inch Toro snow blower. 'Ihe snow
blower, valued at $1,8(X) was taken from the scene by remov-
ing a portion of fence to the adjacent fairgrounds property.

(Central Huron) suggested
that the radio already does a
good job keeping people
informed about road condi-
tions while Klopp added the
Ministry of 'Transportation
does the same thing.
Chief Administrative Officer
Larry Adams told council that
since it's budget time, the
county staff is trying to cut its
expenses, not add to them.
"'This is a request from the
OPP. We live here and we
know what it's like," he said.
"'I'o tell people it's OK to use
the roads or to use an alter-
nate route is just asking for
trouble."
Coun. Jinn Ginn (Central
Huron) asked if the Huron
OPP could be given access to
the county's website to post
the winter road closures there
themselves to avoid having to
pay staff outside of regular
hours.
Coun. Tyler Ilessel (Blue -
water) suggested that the
county website just include
links to the services that
already post Huron County
road conditions.
"A website designer can do
that in just half an hour. Why
would we want to do some-
thing that is already being
done?" he asked.
