'the Municipality of Lambton Shores
is adding a community centre, kitchen,
library, and daycare centre to the
existing arena in Medford, Ontario. Me
LRC will meet the LEBD Silver standard
for energy efficiency, and the site design
and construction practices will
minimize impacts on the local
environment.
Thedford is populated by a mix of
long-term residents and young families
and is 70 km from Sarnia. Medford has
in recent years suffered the loss of its
grain mill and two lumber mills, as well
as the closure of the Camp 1pperwash
Army Base and Ipperwash Provincial
Park. The current building is the
municipality's largest user of energy and
water.
Reaching LBBD Silver certification
should exceed the requirements of the
Model National Energy Code of Canada
for Buildings by 46%, providing annual
operational savings of approximately
$20,000 and a substantial carbon offset.
Key design features include high -
efficiency upgrades for the ice rink; heat
reclamation; low -flow plumbing; high -
efficiency HVAC and lighting controls;
rgyStar-rated commercial kitchen
pment; and solar electric panels,
An extensive verification program will
make it easier to monitor and further
improve energy performance after the
revitalization is complete.
The LRC is seen as part of a
renaissance strategy for the village.
It will draw visitors to the
community for tournaments,
weddings, trade shows, and other
events at the multi -use facility.
Parts of the existing building will be
included in a renewed facility with
an exceptional level of energy and
environmental performance. The
expansion involves the addition of
a community centre, kitchen,
library and daycare centre to the
existing arena.
In addition to its critical role in
the economic resurgence of the
community, the facility will bring
Lambton Shores residents together
and provide social and recreational
activities for young and old. The
harrier -free facility will also serve
as a location for public meetings
and aS an emergency evacuation
centre.
'1'o assist other municipalities
considering similar projects,
Lambton Shores will provide a case
study on its website. In the LRC
itself, interactive displays and
informational handouts on its
"green" features will be available.
Staff will always be available to
provide guided tours.
"Lambton Shores appreciates
the support of the Green Municipal
Fund for our sustainable initiative,"
said Mayor Rill Weber. "We are
thrilled with the support from the
Federal Government on this
important project for the Medford
Community. Preserving and
improving this key community
asset is important to maintaining
the quality of life in the community.
The energy efficient and
environmentally friendly design
will mean lower operating costs
and will be a "showcase" facility to
draw people to the community. It is
much appreciated."
The Government of Canada
endowed the Federation of
Canadian Municipalities (FCM)
with $550 million to establish the
Green Municipal Fund". 'Ihe Fund
supports partnerships and
leveraging of both public and
private -sector funding to reach
