Medford has in recent years suffered the loss of its grain mill and two lumber mills, as well as the closure of the Camp 1pperwash Army Base and Ipperwash Provincial Park. The current building is the municipality's largest user of energy and water. Reaching LBBD Silver certification should exceed the requirements of the Model National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings by 46%, providing annual operational savings of approximately $20,000 and a substantial carbon offset. Key design features include high - efficiency upgrades for the ice rink; heat reclamation; low -flow plumbing; high - efficiency HVAC and lighting controls; rgyStar-rated commercial kitchen pment; and solar electric panels, An extensive verification program will make it easier to monitor and further improve energy performance after the revitalization is complete. The LRC is seen as part of a renaissance strategy for the village. It will draw visitors to the community for tournaments, weddings, trade shows, and other events at the multi -use facility. Parts of the existing building will be included in a renewed facility with an exceptional level of energy and environmental performance. The expansion involves the addition of a community centre, kitchen, library and daycare centre to the existing arena. In addition to its critical role in the economic resurgence of the community, the facility will bring Lambton Shores residents together and provide social and recreational activities for young and old.
