Jim Finkbeiner begins his walk
man raising awareness
of Alzheimer's disease
Lynda Hillman-Rapley
Lakeshore Advance
A local grandfather is doing his part to
fight a disease he was diagnosed with
last year, Jim Finkbeiner is ready to beat
his record from last year when he
walked from the Exeter Fire Hall to the
1 luron Park Fire Hall on January 2, 2010
a distance of 10 km. On January 8, his
goal was to walk from Exeter Fire Ilan to
the Alzheimer Society office in Clinton a
distance of 32.5 km. Ile started his walk
at 8:30 am in Exeter and hoped to be in
Clinton between 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
"1 am not sure how far I will get, but will
do my hest," this long time resident said
before the walk. Finkbeiner has never
been one to run from challenges and he
is taking strides to increase awareness
about Alzheimer's disease and invites
you to joist him on his journey.
I le was joined by MP Ben Lobb and a
host of friends and supporters to make
the trek from Exeter to Clinton. Cathy
Ititsetna, Executive Director of Alzhe-
imer Society l luron County says, "Jim is
a very courageous and determined man
%Om is working hard to raise awareness
of the disease he lives with every day':
lim was diagnosed in early March
2009 with Alzheimer's disease. Ile and
his wife Linda have been working
tirelessly at continuing their life as
normally as possible. Jim loves to walk,
and it keeps him in good shape, so a
walk from Exeter to Clinton was a
challenge he gave himself to keep him
motivated and give him some purpose.
fin's response, "1 have the disease but it
doesn't have me':
Lim is walking not only to raise aware-
ness of this disease but also in hopes of
promoting and getting more people to
participate in the 2011 Walk for Memo-
ries held on January 29, 2011 at South
Huron District School, Exeter; St. Anne's
Catholic Secondary School, Clinton;
Goderich YMCA, Goderich; Seaforth
Public School, Seaforth; and EE. Madill
Secondary School, Wingham.
