SEPTEMBER 2010
SEPTEMBER -Te Municipality of Bluewater is home to a
divided council.
That much was confirmed at a two-hour meeting held at
the Stanley Complex in Varna, which was called by a group
dubbed the Concerned Citizens of Bluewater after Bluewater
Council did not meet that group's earlier request to host a
meeting to respond to ratepayers' concerns.
At the group -arranged meeting, only four of Biuewater's 10
elected representatives came out to address the 150+ mem-
ber crowd. On hand was Bluewater Mayor Bill Dowson, who
is seeking another term, and councillors Marg Deichert
(Zurich), John Becker (Hay East) and Peter Walden (Stanley
East), While tnediator Nancy Ross set the ground rules and
asked for a respectful and efficient session, about 40 ratepay-
ers -- some on several occasions — took to the mic to outline
their issues with the management and operation of
Bluewater.
SEPTE;M13E:R-'There's now a timeline for when the federal
government and the Kettle and Stoney First Nation will settle
a lung -standing dispute over a former militaty base.
The fads agreed in 1990 to return the 1pperwash Army
(:amp to the Kettle and Stoney Point First Nation, three years
after protester Dudley George was killed in a standoff with
the OPP. But the First Nation and federal government have
been negotiating ever since how to dean up and officially
sign the land over to Kettle and Stoney Point.
Elizabeth Cloud, Chief of Kettle and Stoney Point, says
negotiations are now scheduled to be complete by March 31,
2012.
Cloud says it's an accomplishment to set a date to com-
plete the deal. But she says it comes too late for many people
who lived on the land and were told to leave by the federal
government 70 years ago.
