Amity Beach the band
A house band for Jian Ghomeshi?
A: Amity Beach from Grand Bend
James Reaney
OMI Agency
Amity Beach rawks Norma leans,
maybe that's where Q should be, too!
Grand Bend counts as part of Lon-
don, right?
For the purposes of the show CBC
Radio's Jian Ghomeshi will host Q from
a London location TBA in February,
1BN11log would argue it must...because
ace young Bend band Amity Beach
already has a song with "Ilan Ghomeshi
on the transistor radio" in the lyrics to
Barter and Fireworks, one of three
songs, all terrific, on the Beach's recent
self -titled EP.
Amity Beach: Geoff Bailie, Andrew
Gill, Grayson 1lomuth, Fraser Moore &
Jordan 1lansen, additional horns (real
good too) /.ac Sereda &'1'aryn Dougall.
'The hand did v. well in the '2011 JItMA
youth competition & 1BNBlog believes
Amity Beach is ready to rawk that event
again in 2012. Good. The melodies &
playing are tres good, the lyrics knock
me ottt & 1 only regret not saying this
when the whole bring Q to London

Larger than life — Saying so long to Hank
Raaf Keech
Jim SOW Mott
Special to Lakeshore Advance
Grand Bend has lost a Special Person. "f
is hard to believe that we have lost Hank
Krech, says long time friend Jim Southcott
adding his presence, smile, friendship, and
leadership, will be missed by so many.
Hank passed from this world on Saturday
night surrounded by faintly. We all knew this
was coming, and we tried to prepare, but
when the news finally came, we are still dev-
astated. Jacqui and family want their friends •
to know that "your prayers, your caring, your
thoughts, have given support more than you
can ever realize".
The Funeral will be held at Glen Oaks
Memorial Gardens, Oakville, Ontario.
Final arrangements will be announced as
soon as they are available.
Fire prevention makes ideal Christmas gift
Paul Minden
OMI Agency
It's the most dangerous time of the year,
or at least one of them, when it comes to
house tires.
The lights, candles, Christmas trees,
extra cooking in the kitchen and lots of
distractions help to make that so, says
Tom Marshall, education officer with Sar-
nia Fire Rescue Services.
The city has been relatively lucky and
avoided serious holiday fires in recent
years, he said.
"We've had the odd Christmas tree
(fire) over the years"
'There are also usually a few caused by
candles. "A lot of times, it's something in
the oven," Marshall added. "People get
distracted. 'That's usually when things
happen."
That's why the service is urging local
residents to follow the 12 Days of I loliday
Fire Safety this year.
Day one — Water real Christmas trees
daily so they don't dry out and become a
fire hazard. Also, don't place them near a
heating vent.
Day two -- (:heck holiday lights to
make sure they're in good condition
before hanging them and turning them
on.
I)ay three — Make sure there are work-
ing smoke alarms on every storey of the
home. It's the law.
"And, get in the habit of testing them,"
Marshall said. "You walk under theta
everyday"
Day four — Install a working carbon
monoxide alarm.
Day five — Set up all escape plan and
make sure everyone in the family knows
it. 1loliday visitors should also know the
plats, and the location of the sleeting
place where everyone should gather once
they're out of the house, Marshall said.
"So, when we come up and ask, 'Is every-
body out?' You're going to be able to say,
'Yes:"
Day six --- use extension cords safely
tend wisely.
I)ay seven - Keep space heaters at
least a metre away from anything flamma-
ble, like curtains, upholstery and holiday
decorations.
Day eight Blow out candles before
leaving the room.
I)ay nine Keep matches and lighters
where kids can't see them or rt'ach them.
Day 10 — Pay attention to what's cook-
ing on the stove or in the oven.
Day 11 Lncountge smokers to go out-
side to smoke.
Day 12 Keep all eye on anyone who's
drinking while they're cooking or
smoking.
Safety tips, and a 12 Days of 1 loliday
Fire Safety contest, is available online at
